Fixing broken coax

Hi guys,

I was burgled last week which resulted in the back doors of my house needing to be replaced. The hole for the coax cable connecting my receiver to the motorised dish was run in through the wooden frame of these doors but yesterday, when I had the new doors installed, the workmen accidentally split the cable when putting the new paneling in.

I now have two loose ends of the coax cable, is there an easy way I can stitch these together again? The dish is situated right on the top of the roof which is pretty difficult to get to so if I can, I'd rather not have to replace the whole wiring.

Try this solution, you might have to purchase to sets to and splice in a short length of new coax to get through the door frame.

According to link kit has 4 f type and 2 straight connectors so one kit should do. As long as it is a standard coax cable should be no problem. However, might I suggest routing the cable through the wall slightly away from the door frame. I know it is common practice in the UK to go through wooden frames, but here in Spain we go through the wall as most ( modern ) houses use aluminium frames.

Another reason to go through the wall. If you decide to get super energy efficient new doors and windows the cable is already out of the way:D
 
Be cautious about the "F" barrel connector as some are only rated for CATV or off air TV, (white center insulator) there are special ones that have a higher frequency response then a normal "F" barrel connector, using the wrong type could cause a higher then normal system signal loss on the higher frequency transponders.

I think the ones I use have a gray center insulator, these are rated to 3 GHz so the overall loss is minimal.

Although it is best to replace the coax all the way out to the dish/LNB/switch with a new run.

And a bad idea to run the coax through the door frame or trim, through the wall with a proper feed through or down into the basement then up through the floor, or into the attic then down through the interior wall is the best.

You would not be-leave how many customers of mine where biting their nails down to the bone with me a 6 foot 5, 320 Lb man crawling around in their attic, just waiting for me to fall through the ceiling, but it's the best way, the basement is also a good way, but most new homes in California were slab floors.
 
Whatever option you decide to use, remember to waterproof the joints/connections especially the outdoor ones:)

Really? This is the first time I've heard of this or even thought about it. I just assumed* all F-barrel connectors would be more or less the same. I mean the distance between the two coax centre connections is tiny and surrounded by the metal barrel so what is so special about these higher frequency versions (other than cost)?

*Quite possibly incorrectly, happy to be proved wrong.

Another easy entry route in older UK houses is through the air bricks and up through the floorboards.

Some of our stuff runs up into the 2.4 GHz end of the spectrum, (see band-stacking LNB's) if you use the type used for CATV or OTA you can miss out on some of the higher end transponders in the Vertical polarity's.(1.4 to 2.4 GHz band)

And it may look small and be a very short distance, but at 1 to 2 GHz it's a small attenuator, can make or break the signals at the high end, it's like using TV ot CATV coax for a satellite system.

I've never heard of F type barrel connectors of different types. I do know that BNC connectors are often used for CATV and, in addition, are available in 50 ohm and 75 ohm impedances. I'm not aware of F type barrel connectors being available in different impedances either.

I won't say I'd love to be proved wrong but can anyone point me to examples to prove otherwise?
 
The blue ones are the only ones in my bin, so I guess my eyes need to be color tweaked...And here is the EU spec sheet from Beldin.

It worries me just how fascinating I find this stuff. ;)

All my F type barrels are white or clear in the centre so I guess these are basic ones. I usually buy them in bulk off eBay cheaply or then Maplin or Clas Ohlson if I need some in a hurry but none of them mention anything about frequencies they'll work up to. I think I'll be OK though as I'm not planning on putting much more than 1.5GHz through them using standard LNBs. However, it is certainly something to bear in mind for the distant future if I ever get Sky Q or something that requires 2GHz+ down the cable (like an SCR/unicable LNB or stacker/destacker).
 
I'll stick to Bulldog Clips.
