My Satellite Setup
CM 2.4m motorised offset dish, Viking Ku-band 2-ports motorised feed, 2 SMW LNBs, RC2000A, Dreambox DM920.
My Location
Milan, Italy
I'm looking for a good quality satellite + terrestrial combo HD receiver. I don't want any linux box, I just have Vu+ Duo2 but I don't like it, not so simple to use, maybe I will sell it. I'm searching these features: 1) Good and stable reception with high quality tuners. 2) Good support. 3) Good and easy-to-use computer setting editor. 4) Internal card readers and Common Interfaces slots. 5) CS operations. 6) PVR functions, possibly with internal 1TB hard drive. 7) Not absolutely needed: IPTV options and internal DLNA player. I think Technomate TM7102 could be a good choice, but it has only 500GB hard drive, no IP and no player. As I said these last 2 functions are not totally needed, but I suspect this box is too old and maybe without any support in short time. Anyone know any newer box with similar specifications and features? Thank you for your help.

I visited many web sites during these days, finally I'm looking for good old Technomate receivers. Probably they are the best choice for me. Anyway, I'm evaluating TM6902 and TM7102 now. I know that TM6902 is a very good receiver because I used my TM6900 for many years, so I know it very well. It uses external HDD but this is not a big problem. What about TM7102 instead? I think having 3 tuners and internal HDD is very useful, but I need same quality, same performances, same stability like TM6900/6902. What do you think? Have they same layout with additional features in TM7102, or are they totally different boxes? Maybe it could be better to buy TM6902 and external hard drive? Please post your opinion and comment. Thanks.
 
Your Duo2 can do everything in your brief. If you are finding it difficult to use I suggest you change the image.

The TM6902 HD T2 takes a lot of beating best receiver for all round reception with a very easy learning curve,
I still use the TM6900HD as a back up,
Ideal for all European TV just google for more info,

Just added Ch 5 HD to the DTT very good now for Kelly Cates Championship Football League Highlights every Saturday 9:0 pm to 10:30
The TM6902 HD T2 is probably the best HD receiver that Technomate ever made after this it was all downhill :-rofl2

I am very happy with my new VU+ SOLO SE V2 receiver which I bought two months ago. Considering at the moment the VU+ SOLO 4K mainly because of the FBC tuners. You can buy it with internal 1TB 2.5" HDD and add a terrestrial card for DVB-T, DVB-T2 if you want the combo.
I got fed up with receivers that don't let me watch recordings on the PC and the VU+ does it beautifully using OpenWebif or connect to box using FileZilla. IPTV works great also but it is no match to satellite reception.
Sorry to hear that you don't like the VU+ Duo2 that you have. Perhaps you can give us a list what you don't like about it.
What other o/s do you want if not Linux? Android isn't that good IMHO.

So, Duo2 is a very good receiver. I have internal hdd and satellite and terrestrial tuner, so no particular issues. But, firstly it is not the best receiver for satellite enthusiasts (William, you understand), and secondly, support in most forum (not here....) is not so good in my experience. I'm not a PC developer or programmer, and most people speaking about linux believe that all user know this OS very deeply, and it's not so easy for beginners, and every time that I must modify something in my box I must search and search and search on google, boards, forums..... Not the best situation for a satellite user. Last but not least, menu is not so intuitive like in other non-linux boxes. So, this is the reason for my advice.

Thank you William for your very useful advice, as always. You did not mention TM7102, did you try it? Not only in blind scan, but in general use, too. But probably your suggestion is right: TM6902 is a very good receiver. Another question please: what about recordings? If I connect an external HDD, what happen if I disconnect this HDD from receiver and connect it to my PC to copy recorded files? Is it possible? Thanks.

I suspect that's why another Member advised a change of Image. Despite the underlying Linux OS, the specific Image will govern how you include and navigate various features and there might well be an Image that is tailored to your requirements.

Works ok with USB sticks 2 to 64 Megabyte & 1 Terabyte
I have never found the need to play back on my pc so cannot reply to your last question.
 
Well, I'm using BH now, not bad I believe. Also, I don't like that, every time I update my box uploading any new image, I must reinstall all plugins, skins, extensions and so on. Because backup is not compatible between different images. Too complex and annoying for me.
 
Switch to OpenViX for user friendly everything. And post on world-of-satellite.com forum if you needs help with absolutely anything.

Having the linux base helps us, the people that write the software for these boxes, but you the user should never have to touch it. If you do then it means something is missing in the graphical user interface of the image you are using. As a user you should be able to just sit back in your armchair with your feet up and do everything from your remote control.

The VU+ was originally designed, just like the Dreambox, in Germany.
The support for VU+ in Geman forums is excellent but English speaking users feel the support in English is not adequate which is true. In this forum we have a section for VU+ and it is a good place to ask anything if a VU+ user gets stuck.
I know a little bit of technical German but if I must understand something then I use Google translation which helps me to solve the problems most of the times.
I don't have the need to learn the Linux O/S and it is an open source so you have the advantage of doing anything within reason to the receiver as there is no limitations like with standard satellite receivers.
In the setup menus, there are so many options and if you try to understand what each option means, then you can tailor made the menus to suit your individual taste and make it quite intuitive.

You are totally in focus with my problem. Yes, I want a receiver with which I can take remote control in my hand and use it without any deep computer advices. This is EXACTLY the issue I found with my Duo2. As I said, I installed Blackhole image because I thought in a good italian support. But.... well, their forum is not so good in my opinion. If you know computer and linux very well they speak, help, suggest. If not..... it's hard, and sometimes someone is not so polite with beginners. Once I asked for possible BH user manual they laughed to me. Not a good situation, you know. So, I visited Openvix english web site, it seems well organized with many downloads and information (and, yes, user manual!). Probably your advice is correct: I must try to change image in my Duo2. Please do you know differences between Vix and Openvix? Is Openvix a totally english image? Thank you very much for your help, very appreciated.
 
If you need 2 satellite tuners, technomate 7102 is your choice. A good friend of mine has this receiver and is really great. Just keep in mind than can work with hard discs only in fat32.
 
Vix is an older version of OpenVix I believe but essentially done by the same team.

Strangely, I found OpenVix's forum to be exactly the same as your BH one. The 'support' staff all treat you like you're an idiot and are almost surprised that I try to take their time to help me. That said, the image itself is probably the most user friendly one out there for E2 boxes and is a good start for 'remote control' only operation. It's not without its bugs (some serious) but a few of them stem from the base image, OpenPli.
 
OK, understand. During next days I will decide if trying Openvix or reverting to a good old TM receiver.... we will see. Thanks.
