Just a little story of my frustrations with a Panasonic LCD TV I bought a few years back which was second hand which didn't bother me at all as I needed this specific TV because I knew it would not play up with my eyes as I’m sensitive to flicker. Anyway when I went to collect the set, it looked great, I paid and bought it home.

After looking at it more closely I can see a darkening on the edges, after lots of asking on a forum, the cause was put down to the plastics holding the lights in the panel over time turn from white to yellow, apparently this is common for LCD sets. The only way to fix this is to remove the plastic and use hydrogen peroxide etc to make them white again and replace them. Making them white again looks the easy bit, its getting into the panel that the really hard bit. I really wanted to fix this but I realised I would have to be super careful when taking it apart, despite seeing video's on you-tube. I just couldn’t do it.

It's a working set, but it's the knowing it's there.

It would be nice if there weren’t inherent design faults in my case the LCD panel in the first place, but I understand that makers can only design so much. Rant over. :(

p.s. if anyone knows someone super skilled in this please let me know! :)

It's the putting back together that is the real test .....

Sadly it is not always a question of cleaning the plastic ...
If it is indeed and LCD ...then the lights you refer to are cold cathode fluorescents ..which contain mercury ...
This vapourises and current is passed ...much like a standard strip light fluorescent tube in your kitchen or workplace ..
Over time the ends blacken as the ccls age ...
You can see this every day on such lights ...assuming they aren't covered ..
Unlike a tube in the kitchen which is easily changed ...they are _much_ more difficult to change inside a TV screen ..
They are only a few mm thick ...
very brittle and easily broken ...
..but worse ...the manufacturer in his infinate wisdom ...and desire to get you to scrap and buy new ...rarely makes these available for purchase ..
Some do ...but they aren't cheap ..
to give you an idea of cost :-
2pcs CCFL LCD BACKLIGHT REPLACEMENT WHITE LAMP FOR SAMSUNG R20 X22

A large screen TV can have around 10 such lamps in it ...
Usually copies are the way to go ...but these are not easy to change ...
The clips holding them heat harden and go brittle ...thus easily broken ....
Never a good idea to change 1 or 2 ..best to replace the whole set in one go if possible ...
Yes it is a good idea to clean the plastics whilst you have the screen apart ....but this job can take many hours and care is needed removing the screen matrix as this is mm thin and easily cracks ..
Best way is to slide it flat onto a board at disassembly ...
On reassembly ...not one single bit of grit must enter between the diffuser filters and the screen
..and these diffusers MUST go back in the right order...
At best you will see this when the screen illuminates ...
At worse the screen bridged over a hard bit of grit will crack ..
There are also COFs chip on film devices which must be treated very gently ..the film is easily torn ...the chips easily broken ..
Basically this job should be done on a very large table in a clean room ....or you seriously run the risk of creating a giant paperweight..
not for the faint hearted ....and the larger the screen ...the more care needed..

Thanks for the very detailed reply, just making my way through the you-tube video you linked (although this only showed in the quote text), you have way more knowledge than my recollection of what I found out before. I find that video interesting also the one to convert CCFL to LED. Not that I will be brave enough to do it by myself, just interesting.

Sadly in that youtube vid he turns the camera off between stages a lot ...so you dont get to see a lot of it ..
All I can say is ...
If that rather ham fisted canadian can do it ...I guess someone with a bit of technical knowhow and good dexterity can do it also ..
Keep in mind though ...he is doing a cut n shut job on freebies ..so he isn't too worried about damage ..
If you attempt this ..
My advice fwiw ..
carefully lay out all parts in a sequence as they are removed ..
Slide the screen panel quickly onto a sheet of plywood or hardboard ...but dont drag it ...they scratch easily ..
Use a marker pen where possible to label stuff ..
Keep your working area as clean as possible and take multiple photos along the way ..
You'll be glad you did.
...and dont rush the job...

One thing I'll admit to enjoying with the throwaway society that manufacturers have created, is when people buy stuff, get bored of it, then leave to outside for someone to scrap, that is, until someone like me comes along and takes it to find out what's wrong with it, and feel a sensation of sheer and utter delight when all that was wrong was their sense of fashion... :)

Said feeling is presently coursing through me as I picked up a Bosch fridge the other day, in the rain, and brought it home & sat it in the shed to dry out a bit, and I just brought it inside, plugged it in, works fine, no hissing, no leaks, heck, even the bulb still works, only thing I can really find wrong with it is the cabinet smells a bit rank, buuuuut, it had been sat outside for a couple of weeks in varying weather patterns so was bound to go a bit smelly... :-lol

So, going to let it run for a couple of days*, clean it out, and if it's all good I'll let the uncle have it, cos he has a rather small fridge that I'd find useful as an upstairs beer fridge, so a good swap in my books... :)


(*after having been burned (figuratively) by a Haier mini-freezer I'd salvaged that pretended to be fine, cooling perfectly and freezing its cabinet nicely, and conked out 20 minutes after I put it into place where I wanted it and had planned to mod it with a temperature controller to make it run as a fridge, still have its cabinet actually, was thinking of turning it into a peltier-powered thing, but, never worked up the care to do it)
