I have acquired a HD DVD, Bluray, DVD combo player ( Samsung BD-UPS5000 - 8years old) - a US spec machine. It states in manual 120V 60Hz. Would this be safe to use on a voltage down converter that does not have frequency conversion - so 50Hz output?

Maybe - if the frequency isn't important as you have already raised.

But more importantly what region is it? It'll most likely be region A and we are region B. Similarly its DVD compatibility will probably be region 1.

That is the main reason I would like it to work OK to play back imported discs without having to hack my players.

Ah OK. That's certainly a good enough reason.

As these things are generally powered by a switched mode power supply I would guess that the frequency is not overly important. There will be a slight difference in power dissipation but just go for it!

It will play US (region A) DVD's only.

The 10 hz difference may be a problem.

Correct, the only difference will be that the designers omitted the 120V voltage doubler components around the AC bridge rectifier and changed the SMPU transformer to save a few pence/cents/rnimbi on the manufacturing costs.

Lucky fellow.

We were there a few weeks ago, staying in our usual haunt an hour West, near Cecina, but of course traversed your town when visiting Siena and San Gimignano for the umpteenth time.

Enjoy!

Except when it rains - which it did twice yesterday and once today (& when local forecasts said it was extremely unlikely)

Looks like we are in for more rain as we can hear thunder right now - even though the sun is still shining brightly!

If it's any consolation, the reason we revisited Siena this year is that on our last visit there was a cloudburst followed by prolonged heavy rain and we had no brolly, or coats.

I'd parked the car for free, so a good twenty minutes outside the walls.

We were so saturated, I drove back to Cecina in just my underpants and with all the windows wide open once the rain eased.

How we laughed .......

Didn't go commando that day fortunately!

Received the Bluray/HD DVD combo and step down transformer and seems to be working well. Plays all my region 1 DVDs and Blurays as well as all my HD DVDs (they are not regionalised) and multi-region DVDs and Blurays. Also acquired an Ultimate KDX2000 Professional Karaoke player which will play virtually all forms of CD (mp3, VCD, CD G etc. except SACD) and plays all regions of DVD without need for hacking and also has USB port for playback.

Excellent news Dave. I think we all felt that it should work but it's nice to have confirmation.
