What is the main reason for using a txco dongle?


And what is the main gain, compared to a regular dongle?

TCXO stands fot Temperature Controled Crystal (XTAL) Oscillator ..
Unlike conventional Crystals which can drift a few 10s if not 100s of cycles ..
TCXOs use a constant temperature crystal oven ..
ie ..maintained at a more constant frequency ...some as low as 1 cycle drift over many 1000s of hours of use ..
Since the dongle uses a fequency multiplication this error can show up as substantial frequency drift ..which is minimised by replacing the XTAL with a TCXO..

Yes thanks, that explains that.

Looks like I need to keep an eye out for one of them.
 
The same design -usually sold as a dvb-t stick - appears to be in the sub £10 offerings on amazon.

Any claim on stability/sensitivity is to be taken with a large piece of suspicion, no matter where they come from.
 
I have a "cheap" one at the moment. But I have ordered one of these

And it's the newer R820T2 chipset.

Supposed to be more the über dongle, or the rtl-sdr dongle @Vipersan and @Llew have.
