Apropos of not a lot, I was thinking how staid my recent car choices have become and started to reflect on the toys of yesteryear.

My first car was a Renault 4 ... the one with the umbrella gearshift sticking horizontally out of the dash. But my favourites were surely the two (not at the same time!) Triumph Spitfires.

Lost the first to big-end bearing failure and a subsequent recon engine that lasted a week.

Wish I'd kept the second one, though. Lovely overdrive gearbox.

What were your favourite early cars?

my first car was a mini, the starter button was on the floor. i also had a ford anglia pale blue with a starsky stripe on the side (dark blue hand painted by me) another was a singer gazelle, a square hillman hunter shape it had a walnut dash but only a 1500 engine, i always coveted the hillman hunter with its 1725 engine if i remember the cc's correctly. when the front wings rusted out behind the headlights i pop riveted matching polished aluminuim caps over the holes made the car very distinctive, no 3 big end went i rebuilt the engine using cords oil control piston rings to save getting a rebore i think it was fine for a couple of years before the rust got it at mot time.

Scirocco Storm Mk1, without a doubt, even when the rust got to her and the fuel injection took umbrage at my tinkering to the airbox.

Why stop at cars, I should never have let the pogo stick out of my sight.

First car was a Morris Mini (red, though I sprayed it Hammerite blue and matt black), then a succession of firms vans and estate cars, interspersed with an MGB convertible, MGB GT, Fiesta GT, VW Golf, BMW 502, Nissan Sunny, and a Rover Metro GTi. Over here there's been the Astra estate we brought over, another Nissan Sunny (automatic and slow) someone gave us, a Renault Megane, a Citroen C3 and the Dacia Duster we are currently using.

I think you always have a soft spot for your first car, though I really miss the MGB convertible, which I had during the heatwave summer of 1976..

I certainly have a soft spot for my first car - 200 tons of quick drying concrete! Bloody awful it was - a beat up 850 mini. I loved my second car - a 1980s W reg VW Golf. The tin worms finally killed that one off, then I had a succession of Fiestas, of different body shapes - the one before the current one was the best one A Txxx ABC type reg. That one died just before 10 years of ownership - rust got it at MOT time. The current Fiesta is a POS and I wont be having another one

Hilman Imp that we had for a couple of troublesome years, followed by a couple of Vivas - HB and then HC. Always thought the HB was the nicest; like a small version of Chevy Camaro. Favourites probably Lancia Delta HF turbo followed by a Thema turbo.

Speaking of Hilman...... I saw an Avenger last week, in mid restoration. This was one of the early ones where the rear lights had a horizontal and vertical bit, and I remembered when they 'facelifted' it they replaced the lights but couldn't be arsed to press a new rear wing so built them with a cap where the light has been. Well my first car was a mini, the 850 engine was soon superseded when I grafted an MG1100 block and clutch onto the 850 gearbox and also painted it metallic blue. After fitting steel corded radial tyres I could burn off a TR7 from a standing start, but terminal velocity was 69 mph. Great fun around country lanes though. It had so much torque that I had to fit a secondary spring to stiffen up the accelerator pedal and limit the use of all the torque. When I was selling the car a guy came with his son and asked to take it out. He drove it up a hill on the soft spring part of the pedal and complained it did not go very fast, he was in third gear at the time and I told him to press the pedal more against the resistence and he nearly shat himself when he changed into fourth at the top of the hill exclaiming his car could not have done that and he bought it without hesitation.

I'd forgotten about the works vehicles : Various Morris vans, with column changes, an Austin A35, a Hillman Imp van/estate which was so light at the front, you set the rudder rather than steer it round a bend, a Viva HA van which I never did succeed in overturning though it badly wanted to, a Morris 1300 estate car (which was rubbish but had a fantastic heater) and Hillman Avenger estates....

Hillman by then were an american-owned company, cos Chrysler had bought them out and were dictating what they could & couldn't do with the design, so, design-wise, blame the merkins, engineering-wise, well, yeah, 'nuff said about that... :-rofl2

First was another original 850 (blue from the start - RBW 397, see , I can remember that !) - one of the first 30,000 ever built, and so had a thinner/light bodyshell than the later ones. Went through several engines, until I dropped an exhaust manifold nut down one pushrod hole when changing the cam for "948", and which then made its way out of the bottom of the gearbox when it got caught under the crownwheel during a rally! Thought that engine had had it (although it later turned out that the bottom end was still fine after running 3-4 miles with no oil in the sump!), and so built a balanced 1100 with a strapped main bearing on top of an 1100 g/b with a low ratio diff - had to do a lot of bodywork mods to fit the gearshift!

Finally replaced that by a MiniTraveller (FRO 419C!) and fitted the 1100 combo to that - went like sh1t and surprised not a few people (including an MGB owner in France )before I ran it into a wall and put an f/g front on it, and then it got stolen and returned with a buggered engine (my fault for a poor rebuild!). That went into retirement when I got my first, and only ever, company car - a 1300 Allegro, which was nowhere as bad as most seem to make out!

Left the job (before it left me!) and took over my Uncle's old 1300 Marina - had two of those, and well tweaked, they even handled well by the time I had finished with them!

Jumped from that to a Mk 1 Astra 1600 after being peed-off by all the Astra vans that used to rocket past me on the motorways, and tweaked that a lot until I broke the crankshaft! Then 3(!) Mk II 1800 SRi estates - comfortable, bloody quick and very, very reliable even when hammered (and they got a bit of tweaking too)!

Jumped ship again, to VAG. First was a 1.9 TDI Mk IV Golf estate which got bigger injectors and a remap, with Konis and an ARB at the back - also very quick and pretty reliable until the whole engine sagged to one side after an engine mounting failed. It got sold to my neighbour for a pittance (145k miles and so on) and he got another 40k out it before the head went. Now a 2l TDI Mk II Octy estate which did not go well until it got a very good remap to about 185 bhp and an awful lot of torque - which helped me blow the turbo one cold and wet Sunday night and the clutch just afterwards (all very expensive to fix!), but now fine and goes like sh1t off a shovel at 119k miles (just run-in by now!).

And then, early on, there was a CA Dormobile used for a holiday to France the year I left college, a Austin C4 mini-bus that we used for another French holiday and then for "paying jobs" like helping people to move (after I put another engine it because previous owner had let it blow a core plug); and the infamous Yellow & Black Minor Van bought for £50 to replace the Traveller when it got stolen - kept that for years and lent it to various people on the basis that they just kept it taxed and running and so on (that finally got sold to a policeman when the clutch master cylinder went west).

'68 Mustang, 197?Datsun 240z,1972 Mercedes 280SE and GMC 3/4 ton 4WD pick up.

Forgot to mention in the OP I also had a Morris Traveller for a while. Simple meccano job, but quirky.

Minors were easy to repair (replacing the clutch master cylinder excepted because it was under the floor below the driver's feet :(): - gearbox went "silly" on the Van and the stick wobbled all over the place. Repaired it with the gear cluster out of the Mini box that got replaced when I fitted the 1100 box to Mini No 1 because they were actually identical! - dirt cheap repair and it was great afterwards!

Well, until it runs a few red lights and writes itself off!

Left the job (before it left me!) and took over my Uncle's old 1300 Marina - had two of those, and well tweaked, they even handled well by the time I had finished with them!
i had a 1.3 marina not unlike the one in my avatar, i converted the front suspension to upright shocks had van springs on the rear, different size tyres front to rear. janspeed engine mods, custom made exhaust and manifold. Despite all the mods i seemed to spend a lot of time sideways! i remember taking it for an mot, a comment was made about a kink in the chassis i wont fail it because it handles ok said the tester, by the next mot there was a kink the other side ( another kissing of the kerb) it was never mentioned again.:)

Man, you guys are old! :D (don't worry, I'll get there...)

Here's mine... 1L Fraud Fiesta with perished piston rings that drank oil at the same rate as petrol and no power at all. Up the hills, I had to cane it in 3rd to get anywhere....

Alright for the first car though...

I think you'll find that's a Fiasco .....
