Well I have a box here working with channels 41 and 42 and espn. A card is used in my box to receive these channels if it's removed guess what the channels go off. The encryption for the card is sent not over the airwaves bt send it down their broadband lines to the btv box.

Wrong, the channels 42/42 are used for BT Vision too. The BroadBand isnt used to transmit these channels to the BTV box.. Neil

Its still in the same place it always has been, there not a great deal FTA on it now though if thats what you are after... You don't need to worry about 0.8W and 1W. The satellites have always been at 0.8W it's just easier to type 1W than 0.8W maybe thats where your friend is confused

I haq similar isues to this with an original dream 500. What I found was where the tuning can had been getting warm the soldering was looking in a poor state. I resoldered the tuning can to the board. This fixed my issue maybe yours is the same :) Cheers

depends if you want a new box or 2nd hand... Theres some great older boxes ie 7020 or 7000 these can be bought at quite a resonable price

As stated above you would need a multimeter to be able to locate the power rail drop from the transformer side of the circuit then follow and test the capacitors along the rail to you find the faulty one which has probably gone short circuit. The actual component cost will be pence to buy but...

power supply fault, you have a capacitor gone short circuit on one of the power rails I expect dragging it all down thats why it ticks
