As this board already demonstrated, a compromise name will be given for the easily offended:
Fisty McButtplug --> Fisty McB
Boaty McBoatface --> Boaty McB
:D

The name has been announced - and its RRS Sir Dave Attenborough.

Although one of the submersible will be named Boaty in tribute to the popularity :-rofl2

'Boaty McBoatface' polar ship named after Attenborough - BBC News

RRS SDA is a fine name for a boat to bear seeing as SDA has done so much to popularise science and nature over the years.

Predictable I suppose. Fine name for the vessel, the popular vote gets sunk with the submersible :rolleyes:

UK Democracy at its best...
hold a vote, then veto the popular choice!!

So what was the point in holding the vote in the first place...?

Well, to be fair, it was always stated that they would overlook frivolous suggestions so it hasn't come as a surprise. I'm pleased that they acknowledged the popular vote though by naming one of the remote submarines with the "winning" name.

Bringing the story up to date from your man on the ground...

Friday 13th July at about 1:25pm

The boat hull slides down into the water.
IMG_1754a.JPG IMG_1755a.JPG IMG_1756a.JPG IMG_1757a.JPG

Once there the tugs nudge the hull around before pushing the hull into a dry dock for further work.

One of the Mersey ferries in its dazzle ship livery, designed by Sir Peter Blake, comes to investigate.

Some of the wooden props dislodged during the launch float down the river, now no longer needed, to become more flotsam and jetsam.
IMG_1769a.JPG IMG_1771a.JPG

The tugs, having done their job, return to their bases.
IMG_1774a.JPG

Looking from the top of St Mary's Tower in Birkenhead Priory, the red hull of the RRS SDA can just be seen behind a grey ship.
IMG_1775a.JPG

Apart from the last photo, all photos were taken from Monks Ferry looking up the river.

Attention all shipping in the Mersey region the Sir Richard Attenborough has deposited unwanted logs and pit props all along the river. There is considerable potential for propellor damage to other shipping and small craft in the area, Boaty McBoatface would never have been so irresponsible:wacko::wacko:

The amount of wood in the water came as quite a surprise to me as I had never before thought about what happened to all the supporting pieces of wood after a launch. There were some quite meaty bits bobbing up and down.

IMG_1773a.JPG

And if you look at the third photo in the second line there appears to be quite a large piece of the wooden structure still attached to the hull.

It wouldn't take much effort to tether the planks together with a bit of cable and tie one end to the jetty.
