Well, following some advice on the Winhelp site, which said that these scans can take up to 8hrs on a machine that has never been updated, I left mine on overnight (with all the power-saving options turned off - so it could not automatically shut down) and, lo and behold, this morning there were 167+ important, and 60+ optional, updates available to download!

Now doing that, and will then create a bootable flash drive image of the updated config (need to get a 64GB drive for that) before I attempt the Win 10 upgrade again - then I will decide if I will get back to the W7 config level.

PS: lucky that I have unlimited fast cable broadband for the downloads as there are 900MB of them - I think it will take about an hour or so (getting slower!).

Finally managed to get Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) downloaded (click on the file name above "Donate") and working on another machine, but it still took probably several hours to download all the W7 & Office 2010 updates to my hard drive partition because it is quite a sophisticated piece of s/w. But now I have them "for good", and can copy them to a USB drive (appears to need 8.5GB or so, so you need a 16GB drive) and then to the other machines for installation.

Beware, though, when WSUS starts the download process, it goes to the Command prompt and then occasionally appears to do nothing for a few minutes - don't think that it is finished and exit the prompt, but just wait until it starts work again.

Worth a little Donation for something that could get you back up and running after a big crash &/or reinstall (works on XP to W10).

w.r.t. your post on reverting from W10 to W7, it should be possible to use the Recovery facility in W10 to get back to W7 - Assuming that worked, (or even if it did not in my case and I had to use the Recovery partition on the hard disk), the licence number of the previous installation appears to be still valid (or that is what the Control Panel "System" just told me for the ASUS as W7 is showing as "Activated"). OTOH I assume that if you use killdisk etc., that a really big hammer job!
