Does anyone else think that Adrian Mutu got off too lightly???

to be honest i expected it to be far worse, 7 Month ban and £20,000 fine!!! thats nothing to a millionaire. He will also be available for the world cup qualifiers for romania.

As a Man U fan i have to draw a comparison with the way Rio Ferdinand was treated, 8 month ban and £50,000 fine. And his ban meant he missed the Euro Championships

So its worse to miss a test, and 24hrs later prove your not taking them. Than it is to tell the world your taking cocaine.

Dont make sense to me, if i was Rio Ferdinand i would have a few questions!!

I think the ban should have been far longer RD but that's the culture in this country. I think so-called recreational drugs are viewed differently from performance enhancing drugs.

With Rio, AFAIK, there was no previous case of failure to pee in a bottle and so the FA set a precedent for the future.

As a Chelsea fan, I was disgusted with the ban. It should have been at least 18 months.

It's difficult to compare various cases, and nobody knows for sure if Rio had taken something (and I'm not suggesting that he did) but for a proven abuse, 7 months is rubbish. It's one thing for the FA to say that they have increased the number of tests they perform, but what is the point if 7 months suspension is all you get? ... and as you so rightly say, the 20K is an irrelevance.

To think we paid 16M for him, and he'll be playing for Arsenal against us in the FA cup final this year. Outrageous. The 16M means nothing to Chelsea, but what it had been a less well-off club?

I think Chelsea are right to try and hold on to his registration, not that it'll do any good. They'll no doubt be forced to relinquish that by some tossy FA/FIFA panel of plebs.

I also think that the PFA should be slammed for their attitude in all this.

Drugs has no place in football, and frankly the attitude of some of the other clubs is disgraceful. They just see it as a chance to pick up a bargain signing.

I seriously hope he does the decent thing and retires.

i doubt he'll retire.
i think arsene wenger didnt help, he was offering him a job even before the punishment was given out!

good point you make though about the money side of things...imagine if it was Man City or Leeds (both heavily in debt) or any other club that are struggling money wise.

I think Chelsea should try and get some sort of compensation, i know they dont need it, but next time it might happen to a club that does.

I agree totally. It might set a precedent either way, and at least Chelsea has got the money to fight the legal battle.

Player's contracts at Chelsea are quite clear. Drugs misuse is 'Gross Misconduct' and punishable by sacking. Mutu signed the contract knowing that, and was allegedly taking cocaine before he signed!

To be quite blunt I would have prefered Chelsea keeping Mutu and booting out Kazman!

I think that the statement is in the context of the player's rights as a human being who has served his punishment. Wenger just saying what he would do in a particular situation but using Mutu as an example.

Regarding the drugs thing, he wouldn't be the first young man to use drugs. Hell, I even once knew someone who smoked a joint when he was 18. But when you are a top earning athlete....it does my head in that those drug taking footballers don't have enough sense to wait with the drugs until they are retired....then they can "legally" do whatever they want without causing their clubs substantial damage.

So, coming back to the ban and Arsenal: Of course if the ban has finished he could play again. But it is a bit strange that Chelsea are loosing a whole lot of money, Arsewhinger supports their actions (read it somewhere), and Mutu would end up playing there for free. I am not a Chelsea fan, but this is not right. He shouldn't go to one of your closest rivals, and he should pay Chelsea a few hundred thousands a year from his own pocket for a few years. It should be put into every players contract that in case of drugs, he has to retire or pay.

Well, I don't think that you can force him to either retire or pay £15.8M compensation to Chelsea. I think that the least he can do is to join some other big club on a free, and then start taking cocaine again. That's what drug addicts do anyway, with one or two noteable (and praiseworthy) exceptions.

Only my opinion but he is not the first or last player to use drugs.

If Chelsea were not in a position to write off 15million then I am sure he would still be a member of CFC.
Lets be honest we all know he is not the only one in the premiership to be taking drugs its just that Mr Kenyon has decided to make himself important again by saying that CFC have a no drugs policy.
If we can support and ALL PAY FOR TAX DODGERS to have rehab and support why should we all jump on the bandwagon and condemn a young man who can not cope with the pressure of the premiership and a stupid wage, of which he has no idea of how to manage and judging by CFC no support and advice on how to manage it.
I have never taken drugs or condone the use of drugs but having seen how ARSENAL have looked after their wayward stars maybe Mr\Wenger has a point.

Well I have to say that that's a very good point. I'm sure other clubs have run up against the same conundrum, and I think that the normal outcome is that they try to struggle on with the relationship, and that it probably ends up damaging both parties even further.

I also have to say that Mutu was allegedly taking drugs before he signed, and knowing that the 'no drugs' clause was clearly in his contract, he has nobody to blame but himself for being sacked.

With my human head on, I also think that what he needs right now is help, and not a further kicking.

I'm sure that there's a moral in this story, but I'm too stupid and too tired to dig it out right now. Tomorrow maybe. :)

Mmmm....back in the seventys players used to go on all night benders.....leave the party and straight to the dressing room for the saturday game. These binges were common then. Chelsea players weren't so clean back then either, ask George Best!

The biggest let off ever has to be Paul Merson who in my opinion should have never been let back on the pitch.

You're not wrong there... :) ...but there is no way that the teams of the 70's would even be in the top division of modern day football.

The bar has been raised so much higher than it was then (particularly in terms of fittness and physical performance), and if you want success then you have to squeeze every last ounce of advantage you can.

All I hope is that Chelsea don't adopt the less paletable and frankly dishonest tactics of the other 'top' teams. I would rather come third than see that. Let's hope we can do it by simply outplaying them.

or take performance enhancing drugs :D

just kidding.

i think the most important thing to come out of this, should be consistancy in the punishments dished out.

just to add further comment on what teams should do when finding out a player is on drugs...

rumour has it that fergie knew Jap Stam was taking drugs.
And thats the reason i was told, at the time why he left (when he seemed to be playing really well?)

and further proof came when not long after, he was caught using drugs at Lazio

just a rumour though guys ;)

I don't think for a minute that Fergie would stand for drug taking going on in his side.

I don't get the Kezman thing. He played pretty well in pre-season.
He's so small, he gets dwarfed by most central defenders. Still, I think we should give him a chance or two more. Mind you with Duff and Robben (and either Drogba or Eider in the middle of a three man attack) I think we have the most frightening front line possibly in the world.

On paper I would have said Manu had the best front line, but on evidence they are one expensive bunch of goal wasters. Can"t remember such a barren spell..... O-no
