most likely much tighter than 2D was which will upset a lot of expats.
Not that 2D was tight, it just had cold spots.

Ok, that's to bad.
Got the message, no more talk of destruction.
BTW: Is there any way we can hope to keep 1N (et at least the old old coverage)? I dont't want to loose BBC up here in Norway

What's the problem? if you want to watch you either buy a huge dish like 4-5 meter or try to watch with other means, it's all about the size of the dish.

Yes your the only one.

Even if SES lost one of the 2E / 2F / 2G birds theres still enough capacity on the two surviving craft to take over - Im pretty sure part of the replacement strategy was two birds could take over from three if required - something I read a long time ago..

Now no more talk of destruction of any of the new craft if you please.

i would even go to say that one bird could be enough in a very short period of time even possible could cover eb1 or now call eutalsat 28 for a limit time but suspect ses would charge a hefty price for tha tprivlage

It's not that tight, that footprint only shows up to 55dBW which is stronger than what 1N is outputting now in the UK! Sure it's not going to be as wide as 1N's "UK beam" but we knew that anyway.

Why not just encode the channels and put in on a Europe Wide beam and be done with it.

Those footprints are interesting. One thing about the 'crescent' shaped spotbeam is that, similar to 1N now experienced by those in Scandinavia and Cyprus, it may be that once the field strength drops off it goes rapidly and as such in places like Paris and Berlin you'd need the equivalent sized dish those in the Canaries currently use. Further south or east then it may be totally unreceivable too but 57dBm field strength across the UK will be pretty strong, lets hope that it means the FEC can be reduced and thus more bandwidth available per transponder.

Can't be done as the whole point of Freesat is to transmit free to air and not have to pay fees to $ly for encryption.

Many Freesat boxes don't even have a CI slot to put a CAM in now,

I dont feel very well after seeing this...I wonder how big a dish I will need north of Frankfurt 1.8 m perhaps??? Anyone care to guess what size dishes will be needed in the following locations:
Paris Amsterdam Madrid Brussels Berlin. My maths is too elementary to even think about it.

Cheers

All of them with a 60-80cm dish - the outside line is 55dbW which is a huge signal. :D

There will be plenty of signal across much of France, Belgium, Netherlands, and probably into western Germany.

The " UK / Ireland Pan Euro " Beam is basically also a UK spotbeam, just with a little bit less focusing. My guess is, the "real" spotbeam has the same shape, however some 1-3 dbW less in the outer skirts. Basically, it's back to 2D coverage, with the signal much stronger in the UK. You really wont need a dish there anymore, just point the LNB into the skies.

Somewhere east of Paris, & west of Cyprus :-rofl2

Any guess will be just that - a guess. We know the signal strength of 1N nosedives over a few dozen miles in places, Id fully expect the new series 2's to exhibit the same behaviour.

However Cyprus will be screwed with the UK spotbeam - just like 1N.

I superimposed the UK spot at the 55dBW edge over the pan European beam and they are similar but not a perfect match, especially to the north east, but close. I wouldn't say it's back to 2D coverage though, certainly not for those in the east anyway.

I think the new satellites will use the existing frequencies, like when 1N swapped with 2D.
