The SES website have added Astra 1N, which is to provide spot beam capacity at 28.2ºE from next year, to their Google Earth based footprint mapping service (found via the link at -www.ses-astra.com/business/en/satellite-fleet/index.php").

As shown on this snapshot of the 1N footprint, -www.flickr.com/photos/54601843@N03/5068070339/, it is not nearly as tight as many had been feared - receivable throughout Portugal and in northern Italy on an 80 cm dish.

Good find.

Very interesting ................ but this is "the theory".

The "practice" is going to be the crux of the matter.

It'll be interesting when a Footprint based on amateur reception reports comes together.

Well that nice big side lobe heading down towards the Azores and Canary Islands sure does look interesting from here.

Well the footprint over me (and most of France) looks much the same as the present one. Rather scuppers my plans to buy up a lot of cheap 1M+ dishes in advance though :-rofl2

As Tivù says, we'll have to wait and see what it's like in practice.

Has anyone got any idea what this assignment is for? Is it to release EB1 or 2D? Or is it just for extra capacity? What frequency section will it cover?

As far as I know it is to satisfy the demand for spot beam capacity at that orbital location.

There's no mention of any other footprints. It's not all spot beams is it? But it seems like we're not getting 2C back then...

As the name suggests, Astra 1N is intended for 19e and may be a temporary visitor to 28e. It is easy to visualize the spot covering Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the side lobe intentionally covering Spain.

The main difference compared to Astra 2D is that the centre of the spot will be +2dBW stronger at 54dBW. Which must be a relief to sky mini dish users. Otherwise the shape of the beam is virtually identical.

Some more good news.

Eutelsat W3B is due to be launched in a couple of weeks, on 28th October. It will go straight to 16e and replace the 3 satellites currently providing rather patchy coverage.

Now that will be very welcome indeed.

If the launch is successful!

I have corrected it. It has been a long day. :(

When launched, no doubt it will sail once around the world then crash land on my house. O-no

The Eutelsat press release says they have a launch window between 21.51 to 23.17 GMT on October 28 so it should be possible to watch it going up, bar any problems.

I very much doubt it. :D the first frequencies to be activated are almost certainly going to be the 2C "gap" above 11000MHz as 28E desperately needs some additional frequncies fired up

that footprint looks quite wide for a spot beam, considering that a 46 EIRP is still easily receivable.

Hi All

I am trying to get up to speed with the replacement of 2D with 1N.

As far as I can ascertain, 1N will be replacing 2D at 28.2E next year. Is that correct?

Will I still be able to receive UK FreeSat in Stockholm with a 1.2m Channel Master after this change over?

Thanks in Advance!

The coverage question is a hot topic. We don't know exactly what the new beams will illuminate. The only thing we can say is it almost certainly won't be better for fringe reception.

Beyond that everything is conjecture.
