Judging by the footprint of the 2G this bird could also be used for 19.2 when needed.

I thought that too, I suspect it could become the new Astra 2C, which seems to spend more time floating about between orbital positions.

Using the Footprint Simulator at _www.satellite-calculations.com/Satellite/footprintplotterV1.php I've overlayed the output of a spot over the UK with Analoguesat's maps. There should be theoretical side lobes either side of the red lines and the main lobe being in the red shaded area.

Hehe, well I did make a fantasy spot over Helsinki just for fun but it would have caused problems for reception in the UK. :-rub

Seems OK, it's slap bang in the middle of the 1st theoretical side lobe. The red lines should be the nulls between side lobes so it doesn't work so well for the Canary Islands.

Where did you get the information about the theoretical side lobe?

Don't you need to know the design of the satellite dish to do this?

I used the Footprint Simulator at _www.satellite-calculations.com/Satellite/footprintplotterV1.php which shows where the nulls and side lobes would be located for an unshaped footprint. Of course it is all just theoretical and in reality it could be very different. Just a bit of fun.

Should be ok with your 1.4M
Thankyou Buckshee. You are right. My loss of Ch5 was due to wind. All back now, though Ch5 breaking up slightly. If I try and realign to improve signal, BBC reception gets affected.

Did your re-alignment include optimising the LNB Skew?

I do wonder, considering the FEC is currently 5/6 on all the ex-2D TP's, whether broadcasters will take the opportunity to lower this to 7/8 or even 1/1 (ie non), considering the C/N level across the UK has increased by about 5dB. Obviously the only thing they'll be worried about is rain-fade margin but if it takes it down to 2D's fade-margin then they'll live with it for the increased bandwidth. Potentially there's another 8M Symbols available, broadcasters like C5 would appreciate that for improvements to PQ on their congested transponder, also C4 could fit 4Seven along with the other SD C4's.

Obviously this has effects for those on the fringes and expats too as you'd need a much higher C/N figure to get lock.

I can't see them reducing the FEC too much after all I got the impression they are trying to get a better signal in the extremes of the UK and Ireland. Does anyone use 1/1? I know 7/8 is quite common elsewhere.

Nothing new there, but at least it concisely dispenses with some of the wilder myths!

Also, the expectations of SES (and, concomitantly the BBC) about 2E don't take into account any possible consequences of the recent launch problems with another Satellite.

Interesting that 2E is intended destination for ex-2D channels. So perhaps 2F can't provide all the frequency coverage that's needed after all.

Speculation? What speculation?

For me this has cleared up a few things. Sounds very much like 2F can't do the old 2D band as some have suspected and so the only other possible change for now is some of the 2B/2A transponders moving to 2F. Then we just need to wait for 2E, which will be some time away yet.
