Hi all,

I only have an 80cm dish and had been using an Openbox V8S for over a year. The box is incredibly limited with a clunky interface but the one thing it did manage to do incredibly well is pick up feeds that many had said was only receivable with a 90+ dish. Whether that's to do with the box or my dish alignment I'm not sure.

I've since had two Openboxes die on me in the space of a few months so decided to buy a Vu+ Zero. I know it's only an entry level box but it was a nice starting point for me in using an enigma2 receiver. The drawbacks on this box though are two things - firstly it lacks a blind scan which is something I really miss having and secondly, feeds that used to just about come in on the Openbox simply won't come in on the VU+.

I'm also not sure if I can record a 4:2:2 feed onto a USB drive like I could on my Openbox.

Are there any recommended receivers for picking up weak feeds?

They are a bit old nowadays but if you can get a second user Dr HD F15 or a Technomate TM-5402 (M1) they have sensitive tuners and are easy to use. Also, you can edit and load channel lists easily using a PC and a USB stick. There was a second user Dr HD F15 advertised in the classified adverts on this forum a few weeks back, I dont know if it sold?

90cm motorised dishes(98x90)+fixed+multiLNB+24Unicable.
Currently 56 satellites, 61°West to 57°East.

Octagon SF8008 4K Twin, VU+Duo², VU+Ultimo4K.
Recycled as the owner.

En VU+ solo tienen busqueda ciega los modelos VU+DUO2, VU+Solo2, VU+SoloSE y VU+SoloSEV2.
En Astra a 19'2ºE tarda....
VU+DUO2....5 minutos
VU+Solo2...16 minutos
VU+SoloSExx...??

------------------------------------
In VU + they only have blind search the models VU+DUO2, VU+Solo2, VU+SoloSE and VU+SoloSEV2.
In Astra at 19'2ºE it takes ....
VU+DUO2 .... 5 minutes
VU+Solo2 ... 16 minutes
VU+SoloSExx ... ??

Zero is very sensitive to interference from mobile phones as it has no tuner shielding (top).
The sensibility? Never test.
For the theme of the channel lists, from the PC (personal computer) using DreamboxEdit, DreamSet and other programs, allow to edit and make your lists of Favorites/Bouquets, adding in step any satelties you want, you can also use the lists of others , All Enigma2 (E2) channel lists are supported.
The deco allows with the command to add channels to the favoitos, but is slower.

The sensitivity/warmth is the same in these VU+DUO2, SoloSE and SoloSEV2 models when using the same tuner (single/double).
They are quite sensitive and are well shielded, SR1500 to 49000 (officially SR2000 minimum).

You can record 4:2:2 and 4K(UHD) channels and view the file on the PC, also stream the channel to the PC and watch with Videolang (supports 4: 2: 2), for better 4K (UHD) MPC-HC and a PC > i5 and a good video card, 1Gbs network.
Remember that a minute 4K(UHD) can be 24Mbs, 1 minute records a file of 180-250Mb.

In the Zero, with USB memory that is of high speed (>10Mbs) and configured to use this memory the receiver.

You have to modify the channels 4K(UHD), you see them as data channels, with the editor you modify them to TV channels and so you can tune them, you can not see them, but can be recorded and viewed on the PC if it is powerful.

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated.

I took blademedia's advice and bought a Freesat V7 (Max model due to the extra USB port). It arrived today and I've had a little play around with it this evening - have to admit, although it is very very similar to the software on the Openbox/Skybox boxes, the satellite installation menu was a little daunting to begin with - especially as you have to manually set each satellite to USALS. I had to be careful at one point as it started moving the dish to Asiasat @ 100E :D

In terms of sensitivity though, absolutely brilliant! I did a blind scan of 7E & 10E to test and it picked up dozens of feeds. With my Vu+ box that I'd been using for around 5 months previously, I'd be lucky to catch just one feed on those satellites. This box was picking up EBU feeds which even my Openbox V8S couldnt catch. It did crash once but that could have been due to me doing several blind scans of different satellites.

I'm struggling to see how I can get the box online though as it wouldn't recognise my TP-link USB wifi dongle and of course, the box doesn't have an ethernet port that I can use to connect directly to my router. Is there a specific wifi dongle available for it? Also, is the internet connection required for it to open PowerVu & Tandberg channels?

You don't need the internet to view tandberg, or PV. Tandberg needs the latest soft cam, which you will have download to the box. The only real use I have found for the Wi-fi is to watch You Tube

----------------
To search feed (technical links) you need blind search yes or yes.
The VU+Zero has no blind search, just look for the TP/frequencies you have in the satellites.xml file
It may be that this limited memory, better search satellite and watch the channels, which chains several searches, thus download the memory of the channels when added to your database.
According to indicates, it is limited to 6000 TV/Radio channels, be careful when performing searches.
Everything with the control and updates by USB, little by the USB-NET.

Hi again,

A quick question about the Freesat V7. I noticed today that If I enter the satellite installation menu and for example want to go from Turksat 42E to Eutelsat 7E to manually enter a TP - as I move upwards from 42E, if I have any satellites in between that are ticked such as 28.2 & 19.2, the motor will actually begin to move to these as the cursor goes past them. This is something I don't really like as it is more or less start stopping rather than doing a continuous move and in the long run probably isn't going to do the motor much good.

Is there anyway to stop it doing this or any tips that will allow me to get to a satellite without it trying to stop on ones before it? My other receivers usually expect an OK/Enter button to be pressed before the dish starts moving.

I presume your using Usals ?, if so swap to diseqc 1,2, you will have to manually store positions but should sort the issue,

Thanks! Is there any disadvantage in changing USALS to diseqc 1.2? Will the dish still track the arc correctly, moving between satellites?

The only disadvantage is setting positions, ive always used 1.2 as I'm forever fine tuning.

Thanks Blade :)

Something else quite minor that I noticed last night is that my LG TV remote switches the box on if I press the 'OK' button - for example if im scrolling up and down the Freeview channel list. The box will suddenly power up and turn to satellite. Anyone know if there is a solution to this?
