Dakar 2023 is still going to be in Saudi - and runs from 1st to 15th January (+ previews on previous days I suspect). The official website & route map is here: Official website of the Dakar Rally

I wonder if the daily TV coverage will use (some of /more than?) the transponders used in previous years, some of which (2022) were on
10E - Astra 10E, 10996 H 7200 S2 HD 4:2:0 MPEG-4 id TV3
NB: In the past there were usually at least 2 transponders in use on 10E, one of which was encrypted most of the time, and neither of them broadcast 24/7.

21.9E - Eutel-21B, 11485 H 4200 MPEG-4

If/when anyone can confirm, or add to those, please post here.

NB: Based on past experience, anyone in the UK will probably need at least a 1.1m dish to stand much chance of picking up the channels on 10E with any degree of ease/reliability, although you might get lucky with a slightly smaller dish if you live in the South East.!

FWIW, I did Blindscans of both 10E & 21.9/22E (with the 1.2m Gibby & SX88) a couple of hours ago, but those didn't result in any channels that looked to be identifiable as mobile SNG ground stations in Saudi - so, has anyone else had a go on those or other sats and found anything "interesting" in the context of the Dakar 2023??

Took a look just now but nothing on either transponder - probably too late today and will try again tomorrow morning.

That's a point to remember - most of the SNG transmissions will normally be in the mornings as they report what happened the previous day or overnight.

@william-1

Thank you - TBH, I didn't know where to start looking and so didn't look at 36E, which is a change from most previous years when 10E was the major slot used - & I didn't take a close look at CH's post #3, which I really should have done :-doh

Anyway:
First channel is still transmitting (encrypted) but second one has gone off-air - but that's probably to be expected at this time of the day (or early evening as it will be in Saudi). Will take another look tomorrow morning.

Thanks again to both of you.

Thanks. Unfortunately due to a combination of circumstances and personal health (now physically unable to do much due to the spinal problems, and what I can do now takes a very long time) , I've only got the SX88+ (and the old SX88) working, and I've tried blindscans of several of the sats - but (having deleted all the transponders on those sats) I was finding that it was taking sooooo long that I aborted those scans .

Nevertheless I've just restarted a full blindscan of 36E and will leave it running overnight to see what shows up.

Hi William, could you please compile a full sub-bands list for each european satellite?
You compiled one some years ago and it was very useful, but I lost it and maybe it is not so updated anymore.
Such list is very important to scan in the right portion when you target a specific satellite.
For example, scanning at 10E between 11700-12500 would be a nonsense, the same at 7E.
But in most cases I never know the right sub-bands to scan, and I must scan the entire Ku band losing time. Thanks.

Remember most of the feeds from the Middle East will be active in daylight hours 7.00 GMT to 15:00 GMT

And, of course, for those who have it, Eurosport (via Sky on Astra 2 in my case, but probably elsewhere) there are 2 or 3 daily summaries. OTOH, if something else is "more important" then that continues and you may see little or nothing of the Dakar.

BTW: Sam Sunderland (bike) had a bad crash, broke a collar bone and is out.

Also, for a laugh, search/look for the DAF truck 901 - it has a cab at each end, although I have yet to find out why!

Think I found the reason for the above : In 1984 Jan de Rooy created & entered a 2-cab truck (No 622) - see here.

This year's 901 thus appears to be ( or is a recreation of) that truck in the "Classic Dakar" entry category which caters for vehicles that were entered during the early "classic" years of the Parix-Dakar - "problem" solved!:-wow

And it may well have (had) two engines as well !

13.30 GMT - 36E 11052/V/7200 (breaking up frequently) - clear multilanguage updates - seems it's been VERY wet this morning -> flash floods and streams to be negotiated (and sometimes towed out of)!

17.20 GMT/UTC; FTA 36E 11043/V/7200 ID TV3 / "FEED 3" (solid signal - not breaking up) French language commentary for France-TV Sport ("Tous les Sport" /|TLS) otherwise seems similar to what I saw earlier.

17.43 - Transmission ended.

I saw an 8 minute report on progress, included the damaged e-tron Audi axle, the helicopter rescue for the American (Radek ? ) on the Honda and two four wheelers stuck in the river.

Odd there is no coverage on UK TV at all.
