Looks like a rebroadcast of the transmission I highlighted in post #18 (same presenters, same content).

I saw an 8 minute report on progress, included the damaged e-tron Audi axle, the helicopter rescue for the American (Radek ? ) on the Honda and two four wheelers stuck in the river.

Odd there is no coverage on UK TV at all.
I don't think that there has ever been that much interest in the UK in events like the Dakar - whereas, don't forget, that the event was originally the Paris-Dakar, so a high level of French interest is to be expected. Similarly, there's a lot of interest in other European countries (e.g. Netherlands, Spain, Germany) that historically provided large numbers of the leading entrants and organising personnel.

PS: I think the only time it really got "headline coverage" in the UK was when Mark Thatcher (Maggie Thatcher's asshole son) got lost whilst competing many years ago - unfortunately he was then found and survived.

FWIW, I hope that we can now expect both TV3 and France 4 transmissions at the same times & on the same transponders as above from tomorrow onwards.

Up to about five years ago there would have been an hour or so on ITV4, or any number of minority channels (with English somewhere near the top of their colonial heritage) of the daily sp.

Basically as I said above, "lack of interest" in the UK - ITV probably decided that low viewing numbers meant it wasn't worth paying to use the footage from Eurosport (etc).

We've actually lost a lot of FTA non-mainstream sport over the last few years in "favour" of football in all its forms (which I never watch in any of its forms!) - although we do still have a little motorsport in form of some F1 Races, the occasional WRC Round, and some of the BTCC on ITV 3/4, as well as those on SKY subscription services .

Eurosport has been assimilated to Sky for the hard of thinking, as somebody mentioned above (post #15)

ITV is little more than regional collateral damage.

Eurosport is now owned by Discovery - its only a matter of time till the main sports carried by ES are all moved onto the pay streaming platform so they get to keep all that lovely streaming revenue themselves instead of having to get a meagre payout from Sky. ES will end up as a rump service with a few minor sports then be closed completely as the satellite service gets wound down a decade or so from now.

I think "assimilated" is probably the wrong word in this case - more a case of Eurosport "following the money" and that came, and comes, from the SKY "empire" ATM - but, as @Analoguesat said above, that may not last much longer.

Eurosport coverage was much better when they had a crew take part in the rally who'd give several updates during the stage and at the finish line, as well as from the bivouac in the evening. Then when the Dakar rally stopped going to Dakar they just took the official highlights package and added their own voiceover. It's all a bit half-arsed like much of Eurosport these days.

As for the rally itself it's now just the Tour d'Arabie Saoudite and a faint shadow of its former self.

Assimilate (verb) - to regard as similar; liken. "philosophers had assimilated thought to perception"

or become similar. "the Churches assimilated to a certain cultural norm"

Semantics again, and probably out of date in terms of current actual usage - which would probabably be considered to mean that "assimilate" implies "something" being smoothly merged into "something else".

That form of "assimilation" was most definitely not "smooth":-rofl2
OTOH, does that not remind you of something that is currently being "attempted" elsewhere in Europe??

We get a raw deal on sport here in the UK,
Germany have 2 dedicated channels FTA Sport-1 Eurosport-1

We have Dog Racing on Sporty Stuff & we used to have FreeSport now repackaged as ViaplayXtra HD that may be encrypted later like the other 2,

Viaplay-1 & 2 encrypted,

The broadcasters really take us for mugs,
We should have had British Eurosport FTA by now.
In Europe they have several FTA Sports channels,
But next to none here in the UK

At least we have Quest HD with occasional Sports & by some Miracle we now have ITV-2,ITV-3 & ITV-4 FTA in HD via satellite :):YWow

Not at all, the word has multiple uses and can be currently applied in at least four areas of speech. From its origins,

Verb and Noun -
Middle English, from Medieval Latin assimilatus, past participle of assimilare, from Latin assimulare to make similar, from ad- + simulare to make similar, simulate.

And we can thank the terrorists that threatened the competitors in 2008 for that.

True however the Africa Eco Race has managed to run a similar route from France to Dakar since 2009. The offical 'Dakar' is now nothing but a brand name sold to the highest bidder :(

PS If anyone wants to see how Eurosport is going down the drain have a look at the live cross-country skiing on Eurosport 1 right now. The picture looks like a dodgy internet stream.
