If Matt Smith has his way the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary episode of Doctor Who, set for November 2013, will be a 3D 'multi-doctor' special. The incumbent Doctor recently claimed he wouldn't stay on as the Doctor indefinitely, but he would like to be part of the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary episode.

The multi-doctor storyline, wherein previous actors who've played Doctor Who reprise their roles, was done for the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] and 20[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversaries of the show. For the upcoming 50[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary, fans are hoping that many previous Doctors will be willing to come back, such as Colin Baker, Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, who played the Doctor in the TV-movie version of the series, and Peter Davison, who has already reprised his role in two other episodes. Though we are yet to hear as to whether or not these actors will be coming back, David Tennant, another previous doctor, has already said he's willing. Only Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor for just one season in 2005, already confirmed that he will not be returning.

“I love making Doctor Who and I get to be a part of that 50[SUP]th[/SUP] year which they'll do something mental for. You know it will be brilliant,” Smith told Bang Showbiz. “I'm interested in all the 3D stuff. If it could be filmed for 3D TV that would be fun, especially with Doctor Who, but it's very expensive. I don't know how they'd do it.”

Despite some confusion over the next Doctor Who series, Smith has confirmed that he will be a part of the show, which is set to be screened in two parts over 2012 and 2013.

Gosh, I can remember watching the very first episode. Matt has been very good as the Doctor and as a long time fan I always lap up any reference to the past.

Anyone else worried about the way this has been worded?

I know what you mean Paul, but it was my understanding that Matt Smith (one of the best Dr's I think) had commited to play the Dr. in the next series. Because of budget constraints a normal years worth of episodes is being split over two years. I don't think that confirms he'll be there in November of 2013, though bowing out and introducing a new lead actor on the 50th anniversary show would be rather neat.

They do appear to have forgotten the original laws regarding time lord regeneration limits.

Well, the Master found a way round that so it's not an insurmountable problem.

And anyway, there are another two Doctors to go before then

To misquote the current Dr., 'laws can be re-written'.....

and anyway, (without trying to sound too much like an obsessed fan) in Saturdays episode River Song 'gave' the Dr. the rest of her remaining regenerations.

No point in mentioning Richard Hurndall or Peter Cushing then.

No, that was Richard Hearne.

Funnily enough I had thought for years before The Five Doctors was made how much Richard Hurndall looked like William Hartnell.

If we're going down that road are we going to include all the Doctors that came and went on Red Nose nights (Richard E Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Broadbent and Joanna Lumley)?

Bring back Tom Baker, I think he was the best.....Now to watching those annoying 3-D shows in 2-D without the funky glasses, annoying red and blue outlines...Yuk..

Actually, for the Eastenders crossover it WASN'T made in 3D. And the glasses weren't red/blue or red/green or any other colour combination.

The 3D effect relies upon the way the brain processes sinals from the eyes. The glasses had a grey tint over one eye only and this is processed slightly slower than the other eye. The 3D effect is only apparent when an object is in motion, hence lots of merry-go-round movements and cameras orbiting the actors. You didn't actually need the glasses; if you squinted throuh half closed eyes you could see the 3D effect.

So, the upshot is that it wasn't recorded in 3D at all. However there was a proper 3D advert/trailer released for Matt Smith's Doctor Who which I had the pleasure of seeing in true 3D at the cinema.
