One of Raoul Walsh's masterpiece westerns, Pursued is often cited as the film noir of the genre. Robert Mitchum plays Jeb Rand, a man haunted by childhood memories that lead him into a bitter feud with his adoptive family, the Callums. As the violence escalates, so does his love for his adoptive sister Thorley Callum, even though he knows she wants him dead. On their wedding night, as he awaits his death, the story of the curse that has followed him all his life is told in flashback. Mitchum's brooding performance is matched by the magnificence of Monument Valley, where cinematographer Wong Howe captures the menacing shadows that seem to presage tragedy.

Lightcap eventually finds out Dilg's identity and agrees to defend him, uncovering the frame-up that got Dilg into trouble and clearing his name with a soul-stirring speech. They spot him, and the ensuing car chase leaves him dead and reveals a trunk stuffed full of money. Bruner suggests they keep some but Farnham eventually decides to do the honest thing. With one of the other thieves on their trail and a partner who's willing to turn him in, Bruner has to act fast if he's to save his skin and the loot.

The film suffered from being released in the same year as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Wild Bunch and Wayne in Oscar-winning form in True Grit, but it stands alongside them, with a panoramic sweep of a story and two leads who successfully spark off each other.

Reaching adulthood, he sets off to find his real father, Walter but is dismissed as a nut. Director Jon Favreau and Ferrell keep the schmaltz to a minimum, instead using the actor's comedy skills to produce a film that that has a wicked sense of humour as well as a seasonal heart.
