I think radio commentary is much nearer live, there's no messing around with camera angles and such. But even with a guy at an event, I would think the transaction time of placing and getting acknowledgement of the bet would eat up any advantage.

If you do find a little loophole, don't get greedy, best of luck.

Spread betting of course allows you to bet on (say) a horse's existing position, but the time difference between any feed you can find covering the event and the bookmaker's SIS service will, as the previous poster says, will be far too small to enable you to place your bet.

For example - you take a raw feed from the SIS uplink on 20W . One hop.
SIS sends theirs up to 5E for the bookies. Another hop. You get a fraction of a second's advantage, that's all.

I appreciate the help from everyone, but I do know what I am talking about on this

I need to get faster pictures for tennis. I KNOW that it is worth me spending plenty of money IF I can get these pics faster than I currently do

It just looks like its not possible

These sorts of questions come up occasionally, and we can only offer the same advice. The direct feeds are your best bet, BUT some of them wont be sent via satellite. You need to know which feeds are likely to be available before we can really help.

Generally speaking, you need a motorised dish of 1.2m or preferably bigger, probably with inclined orbit tracking capabilities if the feeds are appearing on wobbly elderly satellites. If a 3 second advantage is sufficient, then a cheaper non inclined system will be suitable IF the event is on one of the foreign fta channels (Eurosport, DSF Germany or similar)

Thats great info, cheers

Would terrestrial channels from Europe be available on FTA satellite? For example, would the French, German, Belgian etc etc versions of our terrestrial channels (BBC1,2, ITV, C4 and C5) be available on Satellite?

And please could you let me know what you mean by a "non-inclined satellite"? Is that non-digital?

I think if I need a motorised dish over 1.2m, its going to have to wait until I move house, as my garden already has a big dish (think its 80cm) and I cant really get away with having a 120cm one.

I'm such a technofobe that I cant get my head round using the motorised dish. Pathetic isnt it

Any satellite transmitted national channel will almost certainly suffer a delay, as they probably suffer the same number of hops to reach you.

An inclined orbit means that the satellite does not follow a perfect orbit and you need to be able to move your dish off the standard clarke belt arc to receive it.

I could go on with the Austrian/Italian listings, but you get the idea. There are LOTS! I take no credit for lifting these channel lists from h**p://www.kingofsat.net....

Your 80cm dish should be good for ALL these channels if pointed in the right direction (assuming you have both an analogue and digital receiver - old analogue ones on eBay for ~£20)

Although analogue is getting less popular, I wonder whether there are relatively less delays - for example choose BBC1 analogue terrestial and BBC1 digital freeview (terestial also), there's a good 1-2secs in there. I've not done the relative comparison on two satellite channels, since my setup if 5W analogue only 13/19.2E digital only. Maybe someone with both Analogue and Digital could do a quick comparison say on Fr2 on 5W and ZDF on 19.2E....

I'd be curious..

Maybe a web-stream would be faster (but I doubt it).

I dont want to confuse things more but im curious about the bookmakers SiS feeds. im in bookies quite alot and they show the races from the SiS mux on Sirius 2 along with the onscreen graphics, which can be received with a fixed 60cm dish. So why do all bookies have such large dishes with inclinded tracking?

Because they are watching the direct feeds on the wobbly sat at 20W (before the 20W feeds it was a dilapidated and very wobbly sat at 21.5E)
