Hello there,

According to the footprint it should be possible to receive Intelsat4 72° E in Western Europe.

However, I have not been able so far.

I see the eastern horizon very well from my 13 floor rooftop in Brussels Belgium, where the satellite is at 5° elevation,

Has anyone got a positive experience?

thank you for your response.
i was using a 64 cm triax, because supposedly the signal is strong enough.
i shall now try a 110cm triax.
by the way how strong is the signal from tr 11533 v?
LBC/ART are still keeping this transponder because it is difficult to receive. Not many people can see satellites so close to the horizon.

11533 gives me about 73% signal, in fact, it is the strongest TP of this sat for me.
I can even receive ABS-1 at 75 east but that's my limit. Not because of the elevation but further east there are simply no more KU-tp's with a european beam.

greetings,
percentages mean different values in different receivers, so I cannot appreciate the importance of a 73% signal.
according to the footprint, a small dish should be sufficient.
but you are using a 110cm to get this result; is it a fully satisfactory result? how much signal do you lose in bad weather?.
i wonder what is a reasonable dish size for this satellite.

@ Canofan,

Right now it is very difficult to test signal strengths due to very bad weather.
I will let you know when the sky has cleared and the strong winds are gone, okay?

@ Turok,

Probably the signal in Austria of 80E is just strong enough. You are just within the footprint.
Here in Holland no signal at all.

@jakenl

hi,
what I meant is, other things being equal, how do you compare the signal with your setup, in the same conditions, good or bad, between (astra or hotbird) and intelsat4? this will give me an idea of the size of dish to use.
thank you

Hi.
You can't compare Insat4 with Astra/Hotbird. These sats are much stronger because we are in the middle of the footprint.
Insat4 is weaker but very well to receive. The weather though will have much influence on the signal, which can be the difference between picture or no picture. For these conditions there's just one solution: go as big as you can.

I may have understood why satellites near the horizon are difficult compared to those near the zenith.
There is plenty in the way: pollution, clouds are thicker because you have to cross them all horizontally and vertically, and not least, the microwave emissions of these modern times: they are closer to the ground and you receive them, which decreases the signal to noise ratio; perhaps also refraction which is variable with the humidity content in the sky. You may have pointed to the satellite in good weather and when all that humidity comes your precision will be off.
So it is normal, as you said, to go as big as you can in this case.
My interest is to get LBC EU. but that you also find also on Nilesat 12303 H.
I would rather go as big as I can on Nilesat. With the advantage of getting ADD, showtime and ART on Irdeto. In my area a channelmaster 180 is known to enable reception of all transponders on Nilesat, even with thick clouds, because it yields 4db more than the 120.
Now a 180 dish has twice the area of a 120. it is supposed to yield 6db more.
There is probably some peculiar arithmetic that explains the 4 db instead of the 6db.
best regards

The horizontal transponders of Nilesat are too weak for me. I can't receive any of them. Most verticals are no problem but Nilesat is much weaker here than Insat4 because of the footprint.
I think that goes for Belgium as well.
Unfortunately a bigger dish is no option for me due to local restrictions.
But if you have the opportunity to use a 180cm dish, use it! I can only dream of that. :-cry1

Here in Holland some guys manage to get the horizontals with 120cm but very much dependable on the weather. Probably with 180cm you will have much better signal.

As we speak we are struggling with some African channels on Sesat 36E, 11689 H 11571 (Angola TV, TPA1 and TPA2). Can you receive those channels?

Hi there !
Motoreizing 4,5 m dishes,is a quite expensive solution!.but nothing is imposible!

secrets ,are not good, old dxers ,that are in bisness, since 20 years ,must told how there system work:)

4,5 M dish,to get used ,would not be the problem,installing,and esepasely,controlling with 48 volt,will be much harder,coz yoz cant use,a "normal"reveiver!

3.1 M Cm,is now enough,.last year a saw,on ebay usa a nice andrew 9.4 m motorieized earth station,would
for 54000 us $
be real intersting to know, what it realy psoible to get espacely in cband, here in europe!

here are, some shoots of 80 e satelite !,with 110 cm normal offset dish
