Hi all,

I would like to brush up my 1224 motor, replace the bolts with INOX, rust proof it, etc.

First question: does anyone know what the bolt size is holding the top and bottom plates? It looks like an M10 but it could be imperial one too. Before I go order some, does anyone know for sure?

Second question... that bloody spigot holding the top base plate on - the screw holding it in is rusted solid. I am waiting for drill battery to charge up but I want to drill the top of the screw off and knock the spigot out. Am I better off replacing the spigot with a simple bolt or try and reuse the existing one?

Cheers my dears...

CJ! You would better show picture of the 1224 and show which nuts&bolts you are speaking about.
BTW, all bolts have metric threats (I think).

Rimants, it's the the bolts that hold the top plate to the base thing and the bolt that holds the bottom plate to the main shaft.

Martin, what size bolt are you using for the spigot - I see you knocked yours out.

I re drilled it and fitted a m10 I think it was, I documented it in my 1.8 thread if you have a look, I also placed washers both sides one side is bigger than the other I got the washers from wickes :).

Ah ok. That's quite a big piece to drill for me... Well see if I can reuse it first.

Is not that 6mm bolt Martin? I've found picture of old and new bolts for 1224. They are 4mm (for plastic cover) and rest are 6mm .

I just used the next size up Rimants, if its 6mm I drilled 7mm and got the appropriate bolt.

Took 2 hours to drill and knock out the stupid spigot - it was rusted solid :( Ran out of drill battery again (need a new drill). Unscrewed 2 of 4 bolts underneath, with the other two being rusted and rounded off. Waiting for the drill to charge up before drilling these out. Other than these four bolts and the bottom and the ones inside - is there anything else that needs undoing? Or is there a trick of separating the bottom of the motor from the innards?

Also, what's that white crap all over the inside? Some oxide?

Whit crap is what happens with aluminum after it stays long time in humid air. That must go away from your Jaeger.

Indeed its an aluminium oxide ..
ie ally rust ..
Fine wire wool ..or fine wire brush is the only way I think..
Then spray with a clear celulose paint (laquer)
on Non dive surfaces only ..

Those adjusters are to remove possible play in the worm. Fils, wait little bit till @Trust1 back from his vocation, then he will give you so many information you will not be able to digest

This motor is hard work. Especially when everything is rusted! It's all apart now. Was going to change the two ball bearings as it seemed a little sticky but a quick spray with WD40 freed it up nicely and there's no play there. A bit of lithium grease to the components and it should be as good as new.

Will get some lacquer spray to protect the insides (and outsides..) but for now it's Hammerite time!

These are the 2 tensioners I refered to in my grease thread the other day ..
Large alen key to adjust and 2 large springs behind ..
they apply pressure to push the worm drive asembly onto the the prime gear for accurate meshing of teeth > worm thread..

Thanks Evan, the motor has no play and hitting the spot at the moment, but handy to know for the future, this motor is only a stop gap for me and will be going on a 1.2, I will be designing a making something of my own in the near future for my bigger dish, I have plans :).
