Hey Channel Hopper. I am a photographer based in London with an obsession for recreating the effects of natural light. I’m going to create a large size parabolic reflector with an attached led where the LNB would sit. I already have the led etc. I will be making the surface reflective so as to collimate light rays to create depth and length in the shadows similar to the effects of the sun. I’m based in a large studio in London and this would be a permanent addition to my setup and workflow. My Instagram for my work is @kimhardyphotography on Instagram, I’m primarily a portrait photographer specialising working with actors. Hope you guys can help me out Cheers

You might be better off with one of the solar cookers. No need to take paint off and polish.

The largest diameter I know of is just over 2m, but most for sale are 1.5m and look surprisingly like Chinese petalised dishes, presumably simplifying shipping.

Hey man, thanks for your reply. I’ve been advised away from the petalised type due to the imperfections etc. While reflecting light you will see the lines also the alignment isn’t as an all in one design. Been looking at those for an alternative but if I can get my hands on a channel master etc, I’d prefer that. Anyone have any leads as to where I can source one?

This member recently offered a 1.5m prime focus IRTE dish for free pick up. Might be worth checking if he still has it, not sure about condition:

Hey Cannel Hopper, yes for sure. Do you have someone that needs photographing? Also think I may have sorted the PF dish with Pipedream :)

By the way. An offset dish is just 'part' (cut-off) of a (bigger) paraboloid prime focus dish.
So an offset dish would create exactly the same effect, I would think.
Provided, of course, that you place the LED at the one and only focal point of the paraboloid.

So is there a specific reason, why you specifically want a PF dish?

Thanks A33, I originally tried this with a 1.5 x 1.3 offset dish and the results were not clean at all, I place the led at the focal point however the area of light was extremely patchy and distorted. I did realise then however the serface has a few dinks in and possibly some warps. I’m guessing it would work a lot better with a very precise and clean off set dish however I want to try a clean PF first and see which give the best results. Happy to share my final results with everyone one here btw once the project is finished. Regards Kim

I was thinking that if you worked with a parabolic dish of only 1.2m in diameter then anyone taller would have dark features at one extreme

Yes exactly, however I mainly photograph headshots to mid length. The area of let’s say direct sunlight doesn’t need to be that large depending on the focal length on the lens. I think plus 1.5 - 1.8 is the sweet spot. Also if I diffuse the light source after the parabola then it won’t matter as the light will scatter but still retained the directness I’m after. But I do get your point hence the need for a fairly large dish. Kim

Dwarfs as well then .

The IRTE reflector is aluminium, light for its size and should polish up well, though it comes with a substantial plate for holding it to a fixed or steerable mount.

Additionally the feed arms are thn and bolted to directly to the reflector surface, whch may cause trouble if the light source is heavier than say half a kilogramme.

Aaah so the arms actually protrude out from the centre on the dish? Like the picture attached? In that’s case I’ll be creating my own arm attachment with scaffolding. Either way I have to avoid shadows.

Thanks, you are on it! Yeah looks like a great bit of kit. I’ll make my own scaffolding arm I think. But it looks perfect for what I want to achieve. Cheers.

@kemik8066 there is mine 1.8m PFA hanging on the ceiling in the garage. It also has LED, not in focus though. When you find the antenna, I could help you with making nice & shiny (made of INOX) length adjustable feedarms and also the platform for LED placement. As there is almost no weight of LED then feedarms could be made out of 10mm tubes, that will help to minimize shadowing effect.
