In the bargains thread, someone posted a link to an eBay auction selling a Precision dish with the SMO36 motor. I messaged the seller and offered to buy the motor separately - he agreed! For the princely sum of £120 all in. It's a monster. It's an EL version but I didn't get the jack as I have one from the CM I can use.

It's missing bits, namely the top plate. I've asked him to send it to me, though I may not require it as I'll need to fabricate something to fit my Channel Master 1.8m dish.

The plan is to disassemble it (if I can figure out how!), clean it up, powder coat the rusty bits, replace all nuts and bolts with INOX stuff, lube everything and put it into service. Whether I'll ever get around to it is another matter!

I had something very similar to one of those (perhaps it is still here), boxed and only assembled once.

The issue I found was the casting that went on the pole, it cracked when the bolts were tightened and I did not know how to weld the metal alloy it was made from.
 
My initial problem is getting that top cap off. I am pretty sure it just slides off but there very little to grip and I don't want to break it.
 
From memory it should prise off as the top mount is bolted onto the cap with one 17 (19?)mm bolt

If the dish has been in the atmosphere then bimetallic electrolysis of the different materials will have welded things together over 20 years.
 
Looks like optical for the counting too..
 
is the only thing holding the cone on the top bolt? The main shaft maybe splined

I think it is. Mine didn't come with any bolts but the seller is sending some along with the missing pieces. Looks like I may need to invest in a slide hammer to get that thing off. It's 1224 all over again...

It is. Don't know if it's good or bad but it's there. I'll need a 5v supply there but thankfully I already have 12v going from the multiswitch. A small buck converter to get it down to 5v should do the job (just need to figure out what wires go where!)

Should be a easy enough job to convert it to a reed relay and magnetic wheel if all else fails..

the 1224 could be persuaded with a hammer once the pin was out. If the smo doesnt use a pin through the main shaft its probably splined and is only coming off in 1 direction. The Cone shape makes the 1224's triangle plate look like a walk in the park to remove. Will all depend on the amount of corrosion.

A few years ago I have to repair such beast and made the parts to attach a Laminas AS-2700 for Batting 43 , our Italian member .
The worm from the E-motor was broken .

Looks like it is splined. Will attach the original plate and try to pull it off with a slide hammer. Potentially with a bearing puller as well but I don't really know what holds it in... Need a closer look.

How would you tell without dismantling ?

If the top bolt is out, check for a good thread all the way down and start with some good penetration (as Roy Castle used to say)

Splined is the wrong word, but it's keyed/notched as you can see in the pictures.
 
are the 3 outer holes on the cone threaded? if not could thread them and attach a plate to allow attaching a slide hammer.
