Check the new second dish on another sat like 19e just to verify it's just 28e's weaker signal there.

Yup, good idea, will give it a try. Looking at the signal quality indicator though the 28e signal is stronger than the hotbird!
Any ideas on the "err 5" announcement?

I have a few Global ADX upconverters and a load of ferrite polarisers sitting here. £10 each, or £70 for 5

Sounds like a fauly receiver to me - what happens if you change the disecq ports?

To be honest its not worth faffing around with such an ancient receiver if its playing up - scrap it and buy a decent modern one.

Hello!
i have 2 Mediamaster 9600,and 2 Dbox 1,all with 2dvb 2000 installed.and i recogneized,a difrent attiute,on diseqec, espasely on long cable ways, 40 meter and older lnbs that takes much power,on of my dbox 1 and 9600,works correctly on my spaun disewqec switch sur 411 S,the other dbox 1,shows,on all 4 inputs the same signal, and on of my 9600 has no signal over diseqec, but the others identcly receivers, works fine on the same cable and swtich!
i would say, there is a fall of potencial ,in thr lnb output, that every lnb/diseq swtch kombination, shows other result, try to use, other lnbs,or diseqec swiches, and you can be sure, that you find a combination that work!
the fall of potencial,i think, will go forward faster, addicted how long the stb was in use !

ovis... did you get it fixed?
I have got one of these, just tuning it to 2D as a backup for freeview, as that breaks up every rain storm!
I get an excellent signal, on a mini dish, works fine for anything from 1.5 to 15 minutes then err. 5, followed by reboot.
I have done a new install and have only one channel: BBC 1, it still does it!
Software v 3.1, boot CI106
Is it worth putting DV2000 on this? Will it cure it do you think?

No problem with my 9600S with CI3.1 and no err 5
I tried DVB2000 (on 9200S) and it was awful with a terrible user interface.
Try to reinstall the firmware again using Windows 98, with all cables disconnected, especially the LNB coaxial and then do the setup from scratch.
Try to scan only the TPs that you need, as if you put it on automatic scan it will overflow the memory when it get past the 400 channels storage.

Thanks for the prompt answers!

I'll try the re-install of 3.1 first as that is still offered by Nokia on their site!

HB13DISH, are you running yours against Astra, or another sat?

What LNB do you use?

Could this be an Astra / LNB combination issue, when Ovis states only problems with Astra?

I am using it for Hot Bird 13E and Amos 4W, using a DISEQ.
The LNB for Amos is single and for Hot Bird is one of the ports from a quad LNB.
Wish it was pointing to Astra.

First let me say thanks to all those who have tried to help. Have tried different dishes and even loaded just one transponder on Astra 2A south to see what would happen - same reboots with err 5.
While hunting around found someone on ********* who reported that he had found that a 9600 with Nokia standard software looking at Astra at 28.2 caused reboots - which describes the problem.
Time for a new receiver...

Headintheclouds.. no not fixed- am running firmware CI2.6 and was wondering whether or not to try 3.1. I have downloaded it but the windows computer I have doesn't have a serial port only USB. I know one can get a USB-Serial converter but the software installer is 98 orientated and mine is XP and anyway I normally use a MAC.
Our other friend is not looking at ASTRA at 28.2 - I've been looking at Hotbird for the last 10+years without a problem.
It would appear that 3.1 doesnt work either unless your reload improved the situation.
Don't know much about DV2000 but it would require software uploads via the serial port and the setup arrangements are more expensive that buying a new receiver.
Looks like a cheap FTA receiver is on the cards..

Headintheclouds....Further to this.. bought a FTA rcvr yesterday and downloaded 28.2 channels and was able to watch without reboot.
I believe the 9600 was brought out around the time BSkyB kicked off and probably Nokia hoped to be on the spec. list but they weren't. Maybe there is something missing in the hardware or firmware as a result. They later brought out a 98--.

Have a 9600S which have used for years to access Hotbird.
Moved to Italy and continued to receive Hotbird on 60cm dish.
Recently moved dish round to Astra 2A south beam but the signal totally drops out every 6 minutes or so with "Err 5" and reboots. Thought might be a dish problem so upped it to 80 cms and used a DiSEqC switch to change between the dishes for Astra/Hotbird. Problem still exists. Signal on Astra is probably better than Hotbird which is solid. Location is well within the 2A footprint.
Nokia software is CI2.6.
Grateful if anyone can advise solution.

tks
Pete

Hi Pete,
I have also had the same problems with my 9600s, 3 years ago I tried
receiving 28.2E, 9600 kept rebooting regularly. Since then I just receive Hotbird (no problem), and Astra 19.2E which started having problems with certain channels a couple of years ago.
There is a solution to the reboot problem,(haven't tried it on 28.2E )
Each channel that causes the box to reboot needs to be manually downloaded. No need to type in numbers.
1.Select a bad channel to view.
2.Before it reboots enter the MENU/INSTALLATION/ADVANCED
CHANNEL SEARCH.
3.Move down the list to PID's, Press Key < or > on remote control,
(''AUTO'' displayed on all 3 lines should change to numbers)
Now press OK and OK again to download the channel.
The new channel will be numbered, example A 424. Repeat process to
replace all problem channels.
I upgraded my 9600s firmware to Ci3.1 seven years ago, but as you can see it won't solve this problem. If you do intend to upgrade the firmware you must use a PC running Windows 98, and a 9pin Null Modem Serial cable. (Better to stick with a newer receiver model)

Thanks for your posts, as I have also been wondering if it was a fault with the box.

Thanks Viavault,
Will try this method this evening with ZDF on Hot Bird 13E. Deleted it ages ago when I realized it was causing the reboot.
(It might work well now, so I might be out of channels to test)

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, haven't used the 9600s for a while, hooked it up
recently on Astra 19E & hotbird.
I downloaded ZDF on hotbird 11.054H. 27500 5/6, the channel you mentioned in your post and yes it does cause the receiver to reboot
within a few seconds.
I manually re-installed the channel using the method I described and it
does the trick.

The only thing you have to live with is,
1.No channel name (its number coded instead) and
2.No EPG information.

You should still receive Teletext if available.
let me know how it goes,

ViaVault.

(NOKIA 9600s Reboot Problem on 28.2 East & 28.5 East)

Hi,
Regarding the solution to the Nokia 9600s reboot problem.
I have download channels from 28 degrees East, and manually
re-downloaded a few using the method mentioned in my last post.

Conclusion = The 9600s still reboots every 10-15 minutes on 28E even
after manual download of channels. The 9600s just can't
deal with the Sky 28 east
transsmissions.

Advantages = 1. Subtitles disappear, also resulting in improved
control of Aspect Ratio.

Disadvantages = 1. Reboots every 15 minutes on 28 East.
2. No channel name. (channels are number coded)
3. No EPG information.

I still recommend the Manual Channel Re-install method for problem
channels on Astra 19E & Hotbird.

ViaVault.
