Resurrecting a Legacy X86 PC..

I got IE3(?) to access 'tinternet on my Toshiba Libretto last year, but it seemed to not understand how to display the google logo at the time...

Yep that's exactly what I got earlier buddy ..
and why I went for the upgrade to IE5.5(sp2)
Perhaps you too could do the same ?
I'll pop the zip in my dropbox for you if you want to try ..?
but of course it does depend a lot on the version of Win95 you are running ..
The one I'm running is 4.00.950 (B )

I think I downloaded IE5.5 from somwhere for it, I just never got round to transferring it over, the screen has issues where the LCD panel will lose connection from the circuitry inside the screen assembly, a terminal fault for most, so, I rarely use it, it's just one of them things I had to have as I repaired a few of them (and the later 100CT version) in my time at the computer shop...

I put win95 onto a computer with the minimum specs of ram once (4meg!)

It would start up - eventually. But it was useless - every time you tried to do anything it crashed immediately

Very impressed speed wise with Chameleon as a DOS bare bones ..
Done my first WAC700 drive ..
Took around 3 hours ..to do what I used to leave running overnight..

I have a 3c905 card and I'm pretty sure that drivers for it are included in xp.
I might have drivers for 95 somewhere, probably on some disconnected drive, tell me if you want me to look for them.

Nothing really new to report as yet ..other than I fried The primary IDE port master ..
Stupid stupid ...stupid ..
But the secondary Master ,Secondary slave ..and Primary Slave are still good ..so Can still boot all the OS ok
I'll keep watching fleabay in case a used Jetway suitable mobo turns up..
In the meantime ..
I can now report pullout working OS for win 3.1
Win95 B ..
I even got 95 to install a universal serial bus root hub driver ..
but still cant recognise a usb stick ..
Still working on it ..
But at least I can access google on it with reasonable display ..
IE 5.5

32 bit truecolour 1152 x 864 display..
..and I have network access with the 3com 905 ISA card..

Win98SE
2000 (sp4)
and XP home and Pro ..
The latter 3 OS went in no problems ..but then ..better support for plug n play makes a helluva lot of difference..
So ..
why am I doing this ..

(As an aside, I use a Maxtor-branded PCI IDE controller in my Olivetti Pentium75 desktop to be able to let it use a 20GB seagate condom drive (you know the ones, with the black rubber wrapping cos they're so damned noisy!!), not a RAID controller, just basic IDE...)

A good idea buddy ..
My main worry would be early windows support ..
Not supplied with drivers ..so may not even be recognised by 98se 95 and even more doubtful 3.1
..so may be of use in XP or 2000 ...as a slave unit ..but doubtful it would provide bootable option as a replacement for blown IDE master (0)
..have you ever used one ?

Took a chance and ordered one ...
It will always fit in my main PC (ASUS Z97 mobo )which has no IDE..

Not one of those, but my Maxtor one that I mentioned works fine with 98se, it just acts as an IDE interface and just works, don't know about older versions of Windows, but it should work, if that one has RAID then that could cause an issue with needing drivers, but, we shall see...

So ..after much reading it appears USB on windows 95 IS possible but it has to be done on a clean new installation very early in the build ..
Well ..
I have some spare IDE drives so why not give it a go ..
Build 2 is now in process..
