HI ALL!!

I took the dish and faulty motor down today and am having problems with rusted parts on the dish. For example, the U type clamps on the back of the dish bracket are pretty bad. I got three of the four hexangonal nuts off but one just won't budge! I noticed the nuts on the long bolts that enable the dish elevation to be adjusted have also suffered. WD40 works well, but only to a point. Does Gibertini do spares for their dishes and where do I obtain them? I'm sure that most of you will have come across this problem at some point. What can I do about this please? Over to you guys! :-respekt

Could you post couple of pictures of the rusted parts? I think that most of them can be found in near Home-depot style shop, galvanizes or even INOX.

Sorry to be a smart ar*e, but I do an hour's annual maintenance including loosening fasteners one by one, treating them and rusty bits of dish and various brackets with Kurust and applying a smear of grease before tightening.

WD40 is not the best rust penetration fluid and there are many that are better. Also, if you have some sort of heatgun (electric, or a plumber's blow torch with a gas canister) then that can often help as it heats up the nut and causes it to expand - hopefully allowing it to be removed more easily.

A marine supply store would be a good start for new "U" bolts and other fasteners of the correct size.

Or even Amazon UK.....
Code:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=stainless+steel+U+bolts&rh=n%3A1938353031&ref=nb_sb_noss

And when you replace them with stainless steel hardware don't forget to use anti seize on the bolt's and nuts, or you may never get them tight or off later.

"Home-depot" is US. You can also try ebay as suitable clamps and other bits are often available there (might take a bit of searching though!). Finally, if nothing turns up, I know of a couple of sat trade suppliers that should have what you need - but they'll be more expensive.

That is why I've said Home-depot style , meaning any kind of shop which sells fasteners. Sometimes, the best penetrating oil is the angle grinder with cut-off disc. Just cut off old&rusty parts and then replace them by new ones.,

On a maybe slightly more "useful" note, I came across this stuff "Scottolier FS 365" a couple of years ago - I've used it on the BBQ over Winter to reduce the chance of it rusting, and I sprayed the bolts on all the dishes last Autumn, and, so far, it seems to do a reasonable job of keeping everything fairly corrosion free.

I just use the spray on white lithium grease like you use on the garage door rails, a little shot will do yah.

Can you not use a "nut splitter" - when I used to work on my old rusty cars I found one invaluable

Most motorist discount type stores also sell.

Very little chance of damaging bolt threads further as well unlike angle grinder (which I also used at times)

@davemurgtroyd : every method for removing rusted-on nuts has both advantages and disadvantages.

In the case of nut splitters, I think that one of the latter comes when one needs to remove a nut on a small-diameter bolt/clamp-thread, because the amount of force one would have to apply to a spanner/socket+wrench to force the cutting edge through the nut might well be sufficient to shear the bolt itself!

Easiest way I've found to remove bolts like that stuck on a thread is to first wire brush the thread so it's clean then hit the nut with a lot of heat from a plumbers gas torch. Get it red hot and it'll probably turn.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

With Gibertini dishes (( and a couple of other makes) , the corrosion is not so much the seizure of ones nuts (oooerrr) but the bolts and surrounding sleeves that keep the elevation in place.

Some careful removal with a hacksaw is often the only way and fabricate an alternative.

Thanks for the replies. The nuts that alter the elevation are okay! But one on a U bolt is jammed solid!! I'd be happy to buy a new set of these U bolts if somebody can tell me where I order them please as I really need to get this done!

I hate to say this (and others will hate me for saying it as well!) but you could try contacting Hi-Sat in Harlech to see if they might have suitable U-Bolts - here is their current list of sat-dish mounting hardware on eBay, but I suspect they might have other stuff as well.

Disclaimer: I've never bought anything from there, and others have had "bad experiences" when doing so - so they are NOT a "recommended supplier" - but, "when needs must"......?????

I can't post any pics as I don't have a smart phone and I cannot find my camera! Otherwise I would. I'm going to try and get that nut off by soaking it in oil. I thought about trying to boil it but that may not be hot enough! I can only try these things!!!
