Some definite info on the BBC channels moving off 1N

Is there any evidence for that happening at this particular time? - ie has it been a problem in the past? or is it only likely to be something for the future?

Lots of 1.2m dishes in the South Costa Blanca in the 2D era were affected when Badr5 got switched on. More than anything else it made perfect alignment and skew necessary.

After playing with the footprint simulator for a week or two I came to the conclusion the size of the satellite transmitting dish would need to be around 1.5m. A 2.6m dish produces a too tightly focussed beam such that Orkneys EIRP would be 5 db down on the centre beam signal. ASTRIUM's site claims expertise in dishes of around 1.5m so I may be on the right track.

The weaker signal in the Barcelona region may be due to deliberate beam shaping, a bit like a 'bite out of an apple'.

It is extreamly unlikely 2F is only 1.5M.

1N is published to have 3 x 2.6M dishes and 2F seems tighter than 1N.

If memory serves me right 2D was 1.8M or 1.9M and 2F is tighter than than 1D.

Unfortunatly there is very little tech info but 2F can't be 1.5M its got to be larger.

They can tweek the footprint so it covers the UK, its not a perfect parabolic dish which the simulator is.

Thanks for your reply. The large foldable reflectors on 1N are indeed 2.6m in diameter and it is reasonable to assume that those on 2F will be the same size. However, Astrium state that both the foldable reflectors and the gregorian sub-reflectors are 'multi-contoured'. It is possible (likely?) that only a portion of the main reflector is actually illuminated when producing the UK spot beam and we have no way of modelling the precise effects of the contouring on the resulting beam shape. The footprint simulator can only give us a general idea of the spot beam shape.

Don't know id it's just me, but I appear to have lost 10847V (BBC HD and BBC1 HD) in the last hour or so- on two different receivers on separate dishes (Sky+ HD o na 1.4M p/f and a new Amiko mini-HD on a 1.0M motorised). :-crying

BBC1 Wales HD now gone live.......11:57 German time..channel 143 on Sky HD box is BBC1 Wal HD. SNR on VU+ is 67% and sky box SQ has also gone down to about 65%.

Well comparing BBC1 HD Wales to 8901 and 8911 on the Vu+ the sq was about 82% SNR before 7:00pm in good weather but its pouring down today so I have about 70% as we speak( but its raining sideways here at the mo)..... BBC 1 NI HD by comparison is at 78% SNR on the VU that remains as stable as a rock at all times as its from 1N but is useful as a comparison with 11023. Cant tell you what it was like on the sky box before as I couldnt get 8901 and 8911- what were the scottish and wales regional hd variations. On the skybox Wales Hd is at about 70% sq as we speak .
