Woodgas is one of them things I'd like to try with my POSgen generator, just to see how easy (or not) it is, plenty videos on youtube of people making their own wood gasifiers that then feeding the gas into the engine, perfect project for putting together in a garage or workshop... :D

I mentioned it earlier ......

Yes, wood would generate energy for distilling process, but to get substance to be distilled you need to buy some sugar, and from 1kg of sugar you can get roughly 0.5l of fuel. Means that 1l of home-made fuel can cost up to 2 EUR per liter..... easier to buy normal fuel at the gas-station and burn it.

Natural sugar from cane/beet/molasses/fruit etc

OK, there is another "something useful for garage/workshop/garden" I made today. I did not try how it works, it might happen that some minor adjustments should be done to make it work better. I am pretty sure, everybody had and will have need for such a tool, but you just do not know that it is possible and always used another methods to do the job.
Maybe somebody can recognize this tool.... and what it is made for?
Someday I will demonstrate the results of job done by using this tool.
P.S. It is not necessary to make it out of INOX, I simply do not have other materials.

And you use it for "something or other" :D
FWIW, the only use I can conceive for it is as a scriber for marking circles on metal surfaces (??)

OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

It could also be a "Hummer" or a "Puppy", if it does not take any form of electricity to run it then it could be a "puppy", like "What's this Puppy do?" or "Plug that Hummer in", stuff like that there.

Or it could be a jig for making "Roundtuit's", I use to use them a lot, someone would ask when that thing would be done, I would say "when I get a Roundtuit", the go try find the jig.

And one problem with trying to use wood gas in a gasoline engine, it gums up the valves after a while due to too much creosote in the gas from the wood, I have run a gas engine on methane gas from a cooker, we used pig poop as it worked out the best, stir up about 100 kilos of poop with some water in the cooker, give it a day or so too start do it's stuff, and it ran a little 5 HP engine for several days.

The cooker used solar for heating the mix, the pigs ate garbage, the poop was free.

Word of caution, the gas produced does not have a smell like city gas, so if you have a gas leak you wont know till it's too late, it should be setup in a well ventilated area, without any chance of a spark or open flame, this is why it was warmed by the Sun.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Having looked at info on wood gas generators, most people tend to put in filters to trap the creosote making the gas produced cleaner and less likely to mess up the engine, all depends on how big you want your system to be of course, and whether you want a reliable engine at the end of it... :)

As for Methane generators, I recall seeing something a while back with Dick Strawbridge, where he put together a methane generator out of farm equipment to turn an ex-riding mower into something, even building a gasometer to store the gas, was a pretty neat setup, a bit large for a back-yard project, but still very interesting to see in operation... :)

Just wish I could find the episode of the show it was in, and remember the name of said show too (It wasn't in "It's not easy being Green", it was a later series)!! :-doh

EDIT:
Found it! Planet Mechanics - Cow Power:

Lidl has got (from today) some other "useful" stuff for the garage, notably:

- this cross-cut/mitre saw for £49.99 & 3yr warrantee - bought one because my "really cheap" old one is not much good (even has a plastic "base"). Unboxed it, and, although I haven't yet mounted it on the bench, it looks a pretty solid and well-engineered piece of kit. They also have 3-4 types of 210mm circular saw blades with 42 or 80 teeth - all TCT - for £3.99 each - probably fit quite a few other such saws as they come with extra bore size adapters.

- this Bench Pillar Drill for £59.99 (same warrantee) - my old one is cheap & you can't get parts anymore, especially the right chuck key. Also this new one has a 500W motor and should be better than the 250W motor on the old one, which struggles when drilling thickish metal.

Fair few bits of Lidl in my workshop, I find Lidl and Aldi specials addictive!
Component drawers, magnetic tool holder and the big metal shelf is all from Lidl.
So is the ultrasonic cleaner and all sorts of random things...

I'll have to get some more of those magnetic tool holder bars myself - very useful in the garage, but need some indoors.

Spent most of the afternoon in the garage. Firstly had to tidy it up a bit(!), then remove the existing mitre saw and press drill (which was quick/easy) and then mount the new tools - neither of which was that quick or easy.

Anyway, now both bolted down and tested, and they seem to work quite well, although the saw takes a bit of "getting to know" due to the various interlocks (nearly removed some of them because they "got in the way", but then realised how they all work). Both units are substantial and pretty well engineered, and I hope will suffice for me for as long as I am able to still use them :).

I just take the magnets out of old hard drives,(you will need some small torks screw drivers) they can hold a lot of weight, I hot glue them (and the brackets holding them) to a 1x2 and attach that to the wall. (or what ever)

But be careful removing the magnets as they are very strong, (two each in metal mounts) you could get a pinched finger or a wiped out mag strip on a credit card if you get them too close to something you shouldn't.

They are extremely strong, I've pinched my finger many times on them. Also useful for magnetizing screwdrivers.

I'd need an awful lot of those HDD magnets for what I need - the long (15"+) strip ones from Lidl are a lot more useful for lots of small tools and so on.

I have a friend who is working in PC installations, he gave me a lot of old hard-drives. Usually it is easy to fix those magnets to the surface, they have some holes and it is possible to screw them via those holes by wood-screws. I have installed them a lot, but there are still many left. So, If some of you interested, I could send you some of those magnets. First come first served. Other-ways I will screw them somewhere else. :D
Edit: I did not have any finger-pinching issues so far.
