Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
A question to "get back on-thread" (!): does anyone know of a "reasonably-priced" drill sharpener that can deal with most types (preferably wood, metal AND masonery!) of the drill bits that we generally use?
PS: not "interested" in units that attach to handheld electric drills - they tend to be drill brand/model-specific, so if you have to change the drill then you will probably need to buy another suitable sharpener attachment (if you can find one!).

Did anybody pick up these £2.99p a piece sets at Aldi last year? Well worth it, there's a Blue coloured wood bit set I have that also but not to hand:

I've bought a few similar sets, pretty good.

Went out for milk and coffee, came back with these:
Smaller box is stainless, got fed up of searching for screws in my big pot of random nuts, bolts & screws I've had for years.

Probably did buy one of those, as well as several others from Screwfix et al - but that has left me with excess usable bits in some sizes that I don't use very often, and many "blunt" ones in the types (especially masonary!) in sizes that I really do need to use! That's why I want to get a decent sharpener!

PS: Lidl will being offering a sharpener from this weekend - but, having done some searches, it's just a clone of several others (e.g. Silverline) that get poor/"mixed" reviews because they are mainly built from "plastic" and especially poor at dealing with drill bits (that's why I didn't mention it before in this thread :()

Try the lidl one, I've linked it in a few posts up. This has a diamond wheel the screwfix one doesnt
Also as it's lidl take it back if it doesn't perform! And its got a 3 year warranty.

Also check out the Sealey SMS2008

Here they are, same sizes I believe, the dual rachet spanner at the top is one of the switching types that can be locked to loosen or tighten and free wheel the other way, made by Rolsen, had for years and years.

I find it useful to have a set of "Fixed" and "Articulated" ones for different jobs.

Yes, that's the one to which I was referring - might take another look at that and the other versions of what look very similar
Spare grinding wheels not available, and some very "mixed" reviews recently

I spent nearly 2 days last week sorting piles & piles of mixed nuts & bolts that were around the garage - some went back into those boxes, but many are now stored in the plastic containers we got with various Chinese home-delivery meals :). Shouldn't have to buy much in future except long M6/M8 bolts!
PS: Toolstation are good for buying small lots of those long bolts as you can get packets of 5-10 as you need them, whereas Screwfix only seem to sell them in boxes/bags of maybe 50-100!

Went into Lidl this morning and took a look at the tool sharpener. Seems quite sturdily-built (actually quite heavy) and so "took a chance" and bought one. Will try it out over the weekend and see how it does - IF the weather is not too cold as that affects the temp in the garage, and I don't want to fire up the old bottled-butane space heater (also a VERY useful thing to have in the garage!) unless I have to as we may need that in the house if the c/h goes belly-up!

I think half the bad reviews are people who don't know how to use it properly, especially a diamond wheel.

I'd better find out then as I have never used a diamond wheel sharpener before! Any tips?

I've found out from where Lidl get some of their tools - Grizzly Tools gmbh - the Parkside bench drill and the sharpener, and some spare parts, are specifically mentioned under the workshop tools on grizzly-tools.de. Got the clue from the label on the spare grinding wheel that comes with the sharpener. As for the sharpener itself, I'm not impressed with the drill attachment because the small jig that holds the drill bits is very poor and allows the bit to "wander" whilst the grinding wheel is turning because of the small gaps on either side of the jig when it fits into the sharpener attachment - hopefully will be able add some shims to remove that. Also, seems that the attachment deals reasonably well with bits from 4-5mm upwards but can't properly secure the smaller ones. Going to keep it because I think it will be useful if used with care, and understanding of what it is/is not capable.

In addition the Metal Grinder comes from Compenass H gmbh, although from the info in the manual where it says "Importer" I suspect it probably comes from the Far East. OTOH, it looks very like another of their range which sells for 99 Euros (I.e. about 2x the price in Lidl). Compenass also seem to be the supplier for most of the other Lidl tool ranges!

Noticed that the smaller of my local Lidl branches still had some Metal Grinders in stock on Friday - so if you do a fair bit of metal pipe/bar etc., cutting, but haven't already bought one, this is the one of the four bought from Lidl that I would most recommend because it's pretty cheap, does the job very well and I've rarely, if ever, seen anything like it on the "consumer tools" market.
