Ok ..
Today I took delivery of a more recent variant of the DirecTV SL3 Triple Ka/Ku/Ka lnb..
First impressions are favourable ..
This LNB from the USA is most likely the last variation that is useful to us in the UK/Europe as it doesn't use SWiM tech thus we can access the bands directly..
Swim makes this impossible as the technology stacks the bands onto the downlink main cable in such a way that only their boxes can access the IF data.
I shall be opening it up for a photo session in the near future..
But first I wanted to play around with it a little.
So to this end I substituted it for my modded SL3 using cable ties.
Carl was then swung over to 19.2 E ..and a scan was done of Ka band A with the fixed to band KaA SUP-2400 in line..
The results were instant and obvious ..
See the attached images ..
even without dish tweaking AZ EL it was possible to lock the UNIRE horse feed at 10 db+
So ..this lnb actually looks to be higher gain than the older SL3.
Things to note ..
The feeds are Circular coned for KA ...unluke the oval apertures of the older SL3
The Septum convertor is still present thus designed and better at circular reception ...
This being evident from the dual H/V or L/R scan which duplicates the linear peaks and doesn't distinguish between them.
I shall now gently nudge over to the Turksat Ka A broadcast which IS circular ..
If successful I should get a peak in only one of the scans ...and hopefully much larger than previous.

..and to prove the point ..
an easy lock on this mini mux ...without any dish tweaking..
I know you have seen these channels before ..but not using this SL3 variant..
looks very promising ..and only cost me around £30 inc shipping..
But hard to find on ebay..

Looks to be an interesting DTV LNB assembly VS. Was thinking of getting the version you already have at some point, but will look out for this one if they pop up at auction.

Hi Llew ..
Yes indeed ..this does look interesting ..
I shall be constructing a bracket to hold the lnb longways ...
To the detremement of linear reception ...but if as I suspect the lnb is higher gain ..it might be possible to use it this way..
If that should be the case ..then I will remove the septum from only one of the feeds ..thus I can switch between L/R on one lnb ..and with a little shift of the dish H/V..on the other Ka..
Pie in the sky for now ..but we gotta keep trying..

Back to 19.2E ..and scanning using the Vertical ...although it is actually Horizontal ...
I did manage a lock of ITN Newsnet office ..at 9.7db ...even though the septum is present thus geared for circular ..
As usual VLC moaned and crashed ..but it was possible..after a bit of dish tweaking AZ EL.
So the new SL3 is optimized in H axis and V axis but not Z as yet....
This may be doable ..
Get one ordered Llew..
Ya never know...

And a quick knockup ,,,and the new SL3 is on the lnb bracket at roughly the right angle ..
certainly enough to lock Unire Nag feed at 8.2db ..
the prime lnb I'm using is now a few degrees further away from the focus ..
I'll be trying to activate the slightly closer lnb ie the feed closest to the XMW tomorrow ..
enough for now ..
Here is a Vertical blindscan
ie RHCP...

Horizontal ie LHCP to follow for comparison...

btw Llew
IF you do buy one of these SL3s ...or indeed the older version ..
Don't forget to buy at least 1x SUP-2400
or 2 if you prefer..they're dirt cheap.
You will need one for modding ..and one to leave as is.
That way you can put one on each of 2 f connectors of the SL3..
The modded one will give permanent access to Ka band A ...and the unmodded one you can either leave out ..or include on another diseqc port to switch on or off for Ka band B with the crazyscan special that was modified for me by Crazycat.

Thanks for that. When (or if) I find one, I'll check your earlier posts for the mod. Do you need the BBC downconverter for the new LNB?

..and the same scan in LHCP (Horizointal) ..
slight variation in signal level ..for example Unrire is 9.7db as opposed to 8.2db on the RHCP scan..

Yes you do Llew ..
This is how the DirecTV lnbs function ..
They use the mixed osc signals both Higher and Lower ..
to scan the 2 bands...kaA and KaB ..
Outputing both simultaneously ...
The B band convertor makes accessing Ka A possible ..and it stands to reason that fitting one to one of the F connector outputs ...and leaving one off another ...you can scan both bands ..
But to do this you need to either turn the SUP2400 on or off ...which our set top boxes cannot do ..or hard wire on permanently ON as I have.

OK ..couldn't resist trying the 2nd Ka lnb ..the one closest to the focus..
it required stepping the dish to the East by approximately 30 clicks ...roughly 3 degrees ..
then I rescanned for Unire ..
As expected the signal level had increased in the LHCP scan from 9.7db to 11.1 db ..
That's massive in Ka ..
But makes the possibility of using the new SL3 as is ..a real option ...and maybe even better for linear once the Septum is removed..
To use the other lnb simply switch on the 22khz tone then scan again..
rgds
VS

If this works ..I _should_ be able to cover Ka bandsA and B in reduced pseudo linear ...and Ka bands A and B in Circular ..plus the added bonus of part of Ku in circular as some russian birds do..
..all from one SL3..
nice
:D
From your point of view Llew ..
If you can get it mounted at the focus ..the signal levels should increase substantially ...and might even lock Newsnet without a problem..
I'm close even with it offset several degrees..

So ..I achieved 8 db minimum inconsistent lock level on Newsnet using the new SL3 on the F15 ..
Mighty tricky but do-able ..
Using the lnb port closest to the focus ..and 22khz turned on ..
It is a very clear night ..so maybe not repeatable on most days...but bodes well for you Llew.

Those figures are impressive VS. I've only had Newsnet video up once, and that with the pukka Norsat. Also, perhaps the more rounded feedhorn on that LNB will suit my dishes better.

The prime reason for getting this SL3 was indeed the rounded shape of the feed and ports ..
It means I dont have to make something to fit it to Carl ..
Like you I figured it would be a better match ..and indeed it does appear that way..
No cap on the lnb atm ..but will be fitted with a thin polycarbonate windoe rather than the thick plastic one it came with ..if when the cap is tested the signal is reduced dramatically..
So far I'm seriously impressed with this lump..
Just a pity I can't do real Linear ..but you can't have everything.
What it does show is that a compact multiband lnb is possible ..and at an affordable price.
What you waiting for Inverto ??
..an untapped market out there ..
;)

Is that what you noticed when you were looking for SL3's, or you knew of this LNB and you entered the name of it on the US site?

Keep in mind of course ..that the scale of Ka A is inverted so will bear no relation on a forward scanning box such as the F15 ...
To save you time or blind scanning..these are the 2 main channels data

I knew there were variations prior to SWiM Technology ...but no idea what to look for ..
The American so called sat enthusiasts ..or even the experts are either tight lipped or in the dark ..
So I just kept looking and researching until I found something that looked right physically ...then more research to find out what it was called ...and what it did..
They dont refer to Ka or Ku ..simply call the lnb For 99 101 103 etc ..
Not at all informative...
Frequency range or Local osc frequencies are rarely if ever specified.
If you ask an American vendor ..or forum guru ..
They appear clueless.
For the most part ...I know more about their system than they do..
lol
..and as to how it works or how to connect it up ..
Very much jobs - for - the - boys ..
The users are either clueless or simply don't want to know...as long as it works when they turn it on.
Best kept secrets of DTV is my guess ..
Keep them in the dark ...that way you can feed 'em on bullshit ..and make like a Tech God.

Make sure you get the exact one ..
there is a version that looks VERY similar ..but uses SWiM ..
You don't want that one..
Usually easily identifiable as having only one F connector..
If only One connector ..it's in the SWiM..
:D
