This only started happening a few years ago, I notice it a lot with AVForums, all England based members with sentences like "I brought the Samsung..." I've always thought to myself how can they be coming out with this? If you use the word "bought" then that's the past tense for buying something from a shop ect, If you "brought" something then that's past tense for taking something from somewhere like "I brought that drill over for you, it's in the boot mate" If you "brought" a TV from a shop then I hope you bloody paid for it in the first place! lol
Have a look on Hotukdeals, it will drive you nuts!

I never knew this was an actual condition! I was shouted at in school because of my handwriting etc, called lazy, a trouble maker, all sorts of awful things. Even as far as being told you won't make anything of yourself!

Life changed for the better when I went to college and university, I could do everything on a computer.

Just goes to show, those who can, do, those who can't, teach...

If a teacher insists on basically shaming a child for not being able to do the work and not actually looking into the problems, then in my book they're not fit to teach, which would probably put a lot of teachers out of a job!!! :-doh

Even now I'm buggered, some things you have to fill out a form for. I really struggle to do it without making a mess if it's hand written.

Yes I had a horrible experience with school, the first school I attended was a Welsh Speaking school, then my mum decided to become a Catholic so went to a Catholic Primary school. It really didn't go down too well when I asked in assembly who created God. They couldn't answer me and I got confused and frustrated. I was told to go face the wall and my parents had to come up the school.

Since that day they had it in for me.

I don't get why people use "Brought" instead of "Bought" - "Pacific" instead of "Specific"
Is it really that difficult?

It used to amaze me in the junior school when kids didn't understand lend and borrow; so now, 50 years later, there are lots of adults who don't understand lend and borrow

Umm yes where has this "Can I get" come from, I hear it in fast food places all the time.

"Can I get a big mac meal please" - Eh?

Here's this old chestnut to prove that it doesn't matter.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

And this other old chestnut to show what a minefield it can be for a lot of people.

A.Word.A.Day -- Travails of English - 2

that was pretty cool to read lol

The original catchphrase response to a fast food order - 'You got it !'

'No I haven't'

I think that was Burger King's advertising slogan, or part of it at least...

That started back in the early 80s, an Americanism. I remember someone asking in that way for a pint of lager and the landlord of a pub answering, no, I'll have to get it for you, only staff behind the bar.:)

Edit. I see Lazarus has already mentioned this.:)

I think much of the blame lies with the proliferation of texting and the ability to pass a message in 'shorthand'. I have a younger cousin who posts on Facebook whose sense of the correct way to spell the same sounding word infuriates me at times. Hence:

"I'm board"

To which I wanted to reply, "You could always try reading a dictionary"...

It doesn't help youngsters to construct a meaningful sentence when we're offered nonsensical advertising slogans such as S*Y's "Believe in Better", or the Lexus abomination "We don’t stop until we create amazing”. ( Come on, I'm waiting for the tag line - amazing what?)

You're forgetting one more, "Simples"........ :-rofl2

(Which I'll admit to using a lot when being a touch patronising when explaining things!!)

Another one that bugged me the other day, people are saying "Vicious Cycle" now rather than "Vicious Circle"

Then there are sayings that just make me cringe, when I was a Technical Consultant for Hewlett Packard we didn't half spout some crap and buzz words.

Both slogans infer there is still room for improvement.....
