Just as an update, I understand that you can now view Sky channels on a suitable CI receiver fitted with a "Dragon" CAM and a valid Sky card. How long this happy situation will last is anybody's guess.

Yes and also with a Dreambox with the correct softcam and an official card.

I ordered a dragon earlier in the week. There are some problems with the dragon on some sat recievers. There is a list compatable receiver here:

http://www.ucassupport.nl/dragonsupport/english/Ontvangers.php

I noticed that for some receivers are both positive and negative reports. For instance some official subscriptions cards do not get automatic key updates in some receivers.

1) Because a lot of folks wont want to invest 2-300 quid in a new receiver - they are quite happy with their old receiver, but want to see what else it can do at fairly minimal cost

2) Dreamies are fine if you have the time & computer technical knowledge to set them up properly, many folks cant be bothered.

3) The dragon is handy if you have more than 1 CI receiver.

What out for fiery dragons though. The one I ordered arrived at the shop but apparently burst into flames when they tested it, maybe the cam was related to smaug. I am now waiting for a replacement.

But if you have a valid sky card then why not use a digibox ,for the epg etc?

The moment somebody manages to crack Sky's encryptation is the moment Sky will change their cards again. In other words it is a loose/loose situation

I agree that the EPG is useful, but take people like me with sky freesat for instance. By being able to use the card in my topfield I can now timeshift, pause live programmes and record a program (while watching another) to the topfields hard disk. All this without paying 10 pounds per month or subscribing to an expensive package. The topfield has two sat inputs and two sat loop through's so I can still access the EPG on my sky box with or without a card in it.
