That kinda was the deal during Soviet era here as well. Big NYE, with even a local equivalent of Santa Claus, called Dyed Moroz in Russian.

For the first time in ages Im having problems with ZDF HD - the signal is breaking up thanks to the rain battering down. This is unheard of normally here!

Anyway back to DF1. It must be almost 30 years sinvce I first caught this one bored new years eve down in Cannock, idly flicking through the 50 or so Sky analogue channels my parents had access to. Now its a bit of an institition - and Im still introducing folks to it today
