@John - which GTMEDIA box is it you have mate?

Chris (scopus) and me have the new GTCombo 4K 4:2:2 stb from GT Media - a very promising rx if it carries on with the development requests

How is the performance on 4:2:2 feeds? I heard the box struggles sometimes to play them back smoothly.

It will playback 4:2:2 material, even when BISS encrypted, but it is one of the development issues that's ongoing at the moment. We have found that some feeds will play reasonably well and watchable but another might be very choppy. I personally like the machine and do hope they carry on with it's development before getting fed up and move onto a 'New' box to sell :D

Does that receiver play 4:2:2 feeds without the need for a pc etc?

Yes, straight out of the receiver into a monitor , BUT it's not perfect smooth playback yet.
The GTMedia Team are aware and is 'work in progress'

John, I'm interested in getting one of these receivers. Did you order direct from the manufacturer or is there a UK source?

I just ordered the GTMedia v8 UHD model from AliExpress and will probably order the GT Combo tomorrow.
One of the sellers has a Black Friday discount for the GT Combo (4:2:2 model) starting tomorrow, reducing the price to £69 with free delivery but slowish post.

Thanks, I'm not sure if anyone has tried the two and would be able to answer this.

But would something like an Octagon SF8008 4k + streaming the 422 feed via VLC on an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 perform better than the GT Combo?

Why use the NVidia Shield, why not stream direct from the WebIf of the Octagon SF8008 to VLC installed on the local PC, it works OK.

Is getting smooth playback something the box can have fixed via software updates? I imagine it would also be down to its CPU/GPU?

Chuck the 19200 SR 4:2:2 Eurovision Song Contest feed at it and I suspect it would explode.

Ideally I would use the Shield as then I can watch the feed on TV.

I did try to stream a 422 feed once from a ZGemma H9S (Bought in Jan 2019) to the Shield via VLC, Openwebif on a MacBook, and Openwebif on iOS. But it just wouldn't play any video using either method.

I'm not sure if that was down to me doing something wrong or the H9S not being able to hand it. The H9S was outputting the sound from the feed.

I have not yet seen a consumer grade receiver that can manage smooth video playback of 4:2:2 satelite signals in real time.
It might be due to the processing power of the box?

Corporate receivers such as an Ericsson/MediaKind RX8200 cut through mpeg4 4:2:2 easy with no stuttering or latency.

Another option might be to stream from the Octagon SF8008 to a mobile device then cast to a TV.
I have not tried this so am just guessing but it might be a starter.

However, if you already have the NVIDIA Shield then it seems the obvious option?

If you got audio but no video that might suggest the feed was encrypted, possibly biss? The HS9 would output audio but a black screen for video.

Ah, that might be it. With the encrypted feeds, is the audio unencrypted? Like the old Sky analogue days.

I should hopefully be able to give that a go next week. The ZGemma is playing up a bit, so I'm looking to get a new box. John's GT Media pic caught my eye, but as the Combo struggles with 422, I'm leaning towards buying the Octagon.

Ive never seen a consumer box that can do 4:2:2 either bar the Azbox but that was MPEG2 only, which is why I'll keep an eye on this one...

I used the Azbox for 422 back in the day but can't for the life of me remember what the 4:2:2 playback quality was like. For the price of around £80 for the domestic GTCombo that also clears BISS, i don't expect it to get much better on the 4:2:2 playback quality - could be wrong ?. Iv'e got a SF8008 that i could try to stream to VLC but the feed would have to be 4:2:2 fta which are a bit rare to find

Why would the feed need to be FTA for VLC to cope with it?
