Weird cover versions of well known songs.

Stardate 1984. Alphaville are in the chart with Big in Japan - (yes I know Ive mentioned this one before but its a nice tune)

Flash forward 38 years & Alphaville are doing a rather nice symphonic rock version of it :)


 
Stardate 1996 & Wolverhampton rockers Babylon Zoo go straight to number 1 with the ridiculously catchy Spaceman (helped a lot by its use in a Levi's advert!)

JUmp forward a few years & Katy Melua does a rather nice acoustic cover of it in her concerts



(I know Wolverhampton well - I went to uni there :D)
 
How about a cover by The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra? Its the Robinson Crusoe suite

Stardate 1979 - we are back with The Buggles & Video Killed The Radio Star. Ive just come across a French version by Ringo - whoever he might be..... its terrible :-rofl2

 
Heres a bit of a rarity - not a cover but an official alternate take from the original group. OK its The Tornadoes and Telstar again but Id never heard this version till I ran across it today whilst having the stereo cranked up in the office this afternoon :-rofl2

Stardate 1974. Yes its 50 years ago...

George Harrison was involved with a little folk rock project called Splinter Who were a one hit wonder with their surprise hit Costafine Town

I bet most of you have never heard the original, and its so obscure I can only find one cover of it! 1975 - a South African group called Springbok.

 
And whilst we are looking at South African groups - summer 1977 Clout had a massive hit all over Europe with Substitute.

2021 the girls got back together to do a lockdown recreation - and its great - they can still belt it out :-respekt

 
Stardate November 1981. Bucks Fizz are riding high after winning Eurovision with the ridiculously catchy Making Your Mind Up in Dublin in April. Towards the end of the year they release Land Of Make Believe

In 1983 fellow Eurovision winner Celene Dion covers it. In French :-doh Which doesnt really do it any favours at all!

 
If you think THATS bad try the German version released by Elke Best in 1982! "Land der Phantasie"!

Full disclosure I’m not a Celine Dion fan to begin with and that does not help her case, it’s appalling (and that’s being generous) compared to the original.

Probably best known as the UK Eurovision entry in 2022 with the UKs best entry in 25 years Sam Ryder has done a rather nice version of the John Farnham 1986 international hit Youre the Voice

Yes it's weird but (IMHO) very good. A brilliant version of Ace of Spades. It just brings a huge smile to my face.
