-11 here this morning. No wind, but can't be bothered to remove snow from dish (plus, there's more coming this afternoon).

Apart from a couple of light flurries of snow and some sleet, there's been nothing of note about here, though the last couple of nights have been cold. I was checking my outside thermometer at around 6:30am today and it was nearly -7c outside.

You'd be a brave person to put yourself in this dog's paws, she goes off after deer and hares at the drop of a hat and suddenly stops dead or does U turns. Originally used to take her out with me on my bike, but she pulled me off it on a couple of occasions, or just stopped dead in my path.:)

No, snow is not really a problem here... Build-up is so problematic, as dish is almost vertical, and thaw regularly sets in (as it has today). The lnb could of course be heated, but i've yet to loose signal to snow build up.
In fact it was much more sensitive back in the 2D days.

Yup that is rhe 180. Looks small standing there all alone...
 
Another frosty night here but only to -2C....not a cloud in the sky at the moment....
 
A positively balmy 5C here. The ice has melted and even warmer weather is on the way.
 
-10 last night but now at 11.28am it has risen to -4.3 so me and the wife have decided to do a bit of sun bathing on top of the 2ft of snow we've had ! (should be cumfy !!)

Try telling that to the people of this country who think all season tyres are perfect for everything, until they find they can't go anywhere in 2 inches of snow...:-rofl2

We had friends up for Xmas for a couple of days and they then decided to stay another day - big mistake as that night we had 2ft of snow and strong winds. They were unable to stay any longer as one of them didn't bring any extra heart pills. It was touch and go getting them down off the mountain, one part 4ft because of drifted snow. It would have been impossible without snow chains and a shovel. The snow had to be rammed about 6 times to get through and our friend without the heart pills was getting most distressed !!
 
Its just starting to melt here, some of the main bus routes are still not totally clear, I've been making sure the birds get some food and water.

That's good news Martin. No sign of a thaw here ,10am and still -7c but bright sunshine and a strong wind blowing the snow about. Funny thing here is it doesn't matter how much food we put out for the birds when the weather is bad we don't get any. Even when the weather improves a bit the birds just look at the food and carry on feeding on tree trunks and branches. I have come to the conclusion that they are truely wild and don't understand what a bird feeder is or the seeds as what you purchase is different from their normal food. When the weather is bad they all migrate to the warmer areas lower down.(they have got some sence!!)
 
... just sharing some snow /wind damage experience on my Precision 2.2mtr PF using a "Jumbo" heavy duty motor & still in mourning over this :-(
It survived last years snow and gales, but not this years .... some before and after pics.
These are not specifically snow damage related pics, this damage was done by the extremely high gale force winds we had this time last year even though the dish was lowered into the horizontal position and roped down. It still managed to get trashed along with the motor unit. A very very frightening experience at the time and was fully expecting it all to end up through the extensions window. So take extra care chaps when heavy snow or winds are forecast so as to avoid a heartache.
Plans to staighten up the mount & obtain a C/M 1.8 to replace hopefully this summer all being well.

Hi John, i am taking every precaution with my 1.8 install,

I would consider making a new mount, you will have a lot more weight with a 1.8 CM and there's no give, the dish wont bend it will just take off and take the mount with it :eek:

Ugh, holes in the ground, I may have to dig one soon as one of our cats is very much on her last legs...
 
Hi Martin,
The force of that gale that day was absolutely frightening..... even with the 2.2 lowered lower than horizontal with the Cband feed digging into the ground , roped down from the dish arms back to the base of the mount, the wind still managed to get under the dish face and whip the dish back up to vertical and slam it against the mount structure with horrendous speed, hence the bent metal work and trashed motor. The lower part of the support is 6"x6" box section on a 26" square base plate that is fixed with 25mm threaded rod going down about 24" into the concrete base which is a 1 metre cube of concrete. That little lot never budged an inch, but the top section did and i think i will re-design that bit better to allow for the extra weight of a CM. I was very very lucky to get the dish back down to horizontal whilst the gale was blowing, it took two of us to get it down whilst there was a slight lull in the gale. I can remember thinking .. "never again" , i was so lucky it didn't cause more damage.
I'm only down the road a bit from you Martin, near to Center Parcs Sherwood, wouldn't mind a gander at yours in the flesh at some time if that would be ok ?.

You mean summer tyres.

All season (all weather) tyres are fine in the piddling amount of snow that people were complaining about. They are fine in snow up to the bumper.

These are the tyres I have now.





Chains can be added if conditions are really bad. The combination is very powerful as bim has shown.
