I have the same problem with newsnet, the ber is all over the place.

You may be right about 4G as I am very close to the hospital, the masts are pointing right at me.
...and I thought ever tighter footprints/beams would bring an end to my hobby...
Not so ..
The roll out of bloody great metal phalluses on every street corner ..so yer average joe knob'ead can TEX his/her mate about wots fer tea and that new pair of shoes...faster n faster..

Just looked on the map, and the hospital is on one side of me, and the police station is on the other side of me.

So Can airwaves cause the same problems?

Gents can you calculate at what IF frequencies the trouble takes place?
For example VS has trouble near 18550 MHz, subtraction with the LO will give the IF frequency.

Having a hard time believing mobile networks like 4G emit interfering harmonics at Ka-band frequencies.

I have the same problem at that range.

The Lo of the Bbc is 20450

Thanks Chris. That would mean interference in:
18530...18550 MHz comes from LTE network 33 (GSM 1900)
18550...18570 MHz comes from DECT (wireless phones)
Using cable with the best shielding, snap-on ferrites, different routing etc., it should be possible to reduce it more or less.

I cant prove anything of course ...but I would assume it may not be a harmonic in Ka ..but the signal itself which I believe is broadcast in what was the UHF TV spectrum ...
which is indeed awful close to the IF frequencies used between LNB and receiver ...
Or do I have this wrong ?
Happy to be corrected if I'm way off mark ..
Since 4G is mighty powerfull and digital (and in my case in close proximity)..who knows what crap is being radiated ...and if indeed it can intercept the downlink from lnb through switches, cables and in this case the BBC.... even..a poorly shielded lnb...where the interference would come in concentration due to the nature of satellite dishes.
cheers
VS

Newsnet 18560 MHz is right in the middle of the DECT cordless phone band. If you have one in the house, try unplugging it. These phones are well known to interfere, since they are often within a few meters of the satellite cabling or receiver.

Cheers buddy ..
I do have a cordless phone in my house ..and have already tried pulling it ..
A BT Graphite quad system.
To no avail sadly..
and of course ..I had the phone system active back when I didn't have issues ..so is not likely the source ..
That doesn't preclude all other sources ...for example ...a new-ish high school/academy was also built with a few hundred metres of me and went on line as it were last year ..
Maybe they are the source of my woes ..
but I can't exactly demand they close down if indeed the interference eminates from there..
I just don't know..
I do know they have what look like antenna on the roof ..

I already hate the school as they have a sports area and leave floodlights on all night..
That's my other hobby shafted ..
No astronomy for me
Doh!
...
maybe they operate some sort of pager type system on DECT frequencies..

Another local addition a few 100mtrs from me to the East are 4 large masts at a busy traffic junction..
Perhaps these are the offenders ?
Traffic control over wireless ?one in each corner quadrant of a + junction..
what system/frequencies would these be on I wonder ..
Or maybe these are 4G masts ?
but 4 in such a small area ?

Cheers buddy..
I'll start by bypassing that complex system ...and linking lnb to TBS card direct ..
Just to see if it improves any..
But it has to be external interference really as nothing has really changed here ..
Neighbours of course is another issue altogether...and one I have no control over.
cheers for the link..
any idea what 4 masts would be for at a road + junction..?
traffic light control maybe ? ..and if so what part of the spectrum would it use I wonder..

Google finds frequencies like 900 MHz, 4.9 or 5.8 GHz for traffic light control, no threat for the sat IF range.

So ..
looks like it's time to say goodbye to Newsnet and this thread ..
I have eliminated all possiblities now that I can by running a brand new length of webro triple copper ...through an open window direct from the once working SL3 via a BBC to the TBS card ..
thus changing the cable route and bypassing ALL switches etc ..
A blindscan then done shows all peaks ...
1 from Playboy 3D which locked ..but is 'empty' at 3.5db ....and no locks as the scan passed over the 3 Newsnet peaks ..
Not even a slight hesitation...
The same 'Dip' in the noise floor is also in evidence...
Nowhere to go from here so it's bye from me on this subject..
enjoy it while you can guys ..
I enjoyed being part of the project ...but like my all but useless telescope due to light pollution ...short becoming a recluse in an uninhabited part of the UK ..
I'm basically stuffed..
Already lost a section of arc in Cband ..now this crap.

Makes you wonder if all this 'RF' high power bath we are being exposed to is actually good for us
health wise..
Maybe those so called nutters wearing tinfoil hats aint so crazy afterall..
cest la vie.

That's a real shame VS. All the experimenting you've done with the SL3s, and stray crappy hash starts messing up your reception.

Shame you're so far away from me, otherwise I could bring my Promax to see what's going on around that part of the scan.

Have you tried the Norsat LNB recently on Newsnet to eliminate any possible problems with the SL3 / SUP2400?

Not yet Llew ..
But it had occurred to me to try the Norsat ..
Possibly with my spare Trust feed if I can adapt it ..
But I feel so cheated and deflated atm ..
I'm not coping well with the MS atm ...and to be honest ..just feel like giving up.
My hobby is really the only thing that gets me out of bed in a morning..and it feels like I'm having it taken away.
cheers buddy

Yes, must be a struggle. I really do sympathize with you mate, an active mind in a weary body must be frustrating.

Just out of curiosity Llew ..
The TBS card locks a reasonable signal during the blindscan of Playboy 3D ...but no longer Identifies as such ..
ie ..appears as a blank carrier here ..
Is this true at your location ..or is this too affected by the # signals ?

That's been the same with me on Playboy 3D for a long time VS/Feedsat. TS Reader just gives nulls (8191) on that channel.

Incidentally, I was playing with a Trust feed this morning on the Norsat by simply inserting it in the (Triax) feedhorn I have on it at present, and the signals on Newsnet etc. went up by 2dB over the range!

I'll post a before/after snap soon.

Could the position of the BBC make any difference to this?

If it's at the lnb end or on the back of the box?
