A gain difference of 0.9 dB doesn't sound like very much until you realise that gain in dB is a logarithmic scale. When you do a linear conversion it comes out as around a 23% increase in gain. Phil

Did you try turning the system restore function off before you tried to clean this off. I remember having some sort of virus on my system once which re-installed itself on startup. I think that this was because removal tools cannot get to the area of the disc where the system restore info...

Has the F-type connector got something like self-amalgamting tape round it? Could be water getting into the cable causing corrosion which increases the resistance (may be why it works on 18v but not on 14v). It might be worth cutting the cable back anyway if you are going to disconnect it to...
