Best thing I ever did was to cancel Sky. I just got fed up of prices being hiked.

Having consulted with the boss, we decided (for me) that we cannot cancel Sky, citing the necessity to consume American drivel on the 'Living' channel.

When I get back home, I need to check what it is I am actually subscribing to as I am sure the packages have changed since me singing up back in 2010.

Either way, I'll be phoning the monkeys to cancel it with a view to get a substantial discount.

Sadly, no alternatives such as Vermin (not that I would ever sign up to them) but may take a look at what BT are offering in my area... If anything. Better the devil you know? We'll see.....

You can get 8 hours on one of these tapes by recording in LP mode. Unlike VHS & Betamax these tapes record on both sides - you turn the cassette over. .

Captain Jack, trust me you dont want to go back with BT, they are nothing like they used to be. Abysmal customer services is just the start of it.

I had been with BT several times and was quite happy with them, the last time i had services from them they just took the p**s. I wouldn't go back with them if you paid me to.

I think Sky Living is on Now TV, the boxes are cheap if you get one with a 6 month entertainment pass.

How I wish I had been there.
Phone's auto 'correcter' is to blame.

Yes, there are alternatives to Sky, including just downloading the programmes off t'interweb but I don't feel like teaching her new remotes etc. It's easier to cough up 2 more quid a month...

Quite so ..
I have had numerous discussions with customers in my shop about satellite reception..
They wrongly assume satellite is sky and vice versa ..
Rupie has done a fabulous job of mis-educating punters imo.
Joe public is totally unaware for the most part that there are -any- other satellite services other than sky.
They actually use the the word 'sky' when they actually mean 'satellite'..
it beggars belief

First bought a satellie dish and system back in 1990 as part of a prize from a Electical superstore. Alba, 16 channels and a huge dish.

Had you waited you'd have seen my edited post come up. I'd have gone on to say calling satellie Sky by default is almost like taking all vacuum cleaners to be Hoover. Happy ?

" Sarky " OK you got me, but your edit didn´t work either, at least not on my system.
Anyway, the un Sarkey comment of welcome to the forum still stands:D

I think that the edit function isn't available for brand new posters I'm afraid. Spammers were abusing it and so a limit was put on it.

Sorry it caught you out but welcome anyway.

And there isn't a single person here who hasn't made a mistake in a post at some time. Some more than others...

I've taken a subscription to NC+ on 13e. I'm starting to think if we actually need sky with the huge amount of free to air content on the many satellites up there.

Nobody needs Sky.

It's a luxury item for the relatively wealthy and a potential problem for the less well off in terms of spending priorities.

As you say, much is available FTA, somewhere or another - but there is still a massive perception problem here in the UK: A good example is the undeniable fact that a significant number of Sky Subscribers can't grasp the concept that our PSBs are carried unencrypted on Satellite, even though those same folk rarely, if ever, dip into Premium content Channels.

Our friends elsewhere in Europe seem far more comfortable with the concept of FTA Satellite, whilst here it remains largely a bonus for dedicated hobbyists.

nc+ at least have a low monthly subscription, I paid about 12 quid a month which provides a lot of premier league soccer and movies.. The only thing is that they did not show much boxing matches, and also there eredivisie football is so limited to 1 match a week or every other week, as I could not get polsat sport. At least on cbc sports its free.

I was looking at my old dear's sky bill on the weekend, seems she is currently paying nearly £130 for her TV / Broadband / Phone / HD package (includes 2 multi room's)

I told her I would phone retention's for her this week to threaten to leave and see if we can get that knocked in half

Disgusting amount of money for a pensioner to have to pay out, they saw her coming, but not me ;)

As said already SKY is a luxury and leaving after a long time can be tough going back to free view.
Nobody denies SKY TV is good, but its well over priced.

couple of popular alternatives

Amazon firestick £35 for the stick and £79 if you pay for 12 months "Prime"
Initially i though Prime was great but everything on it isnt included in the yearly subs, latest episodes are £2.50 a pop and films cost too.
That said..... there is a large back catalogue that is included, and amazon only content that will keep you entertained for hours.
Just be careful what you click on, or your Amazon account may end up with more in the basket that you realised..... NOT great if you have kids in the house :/ (you can password transactions)

Netflix £7.50 a month for HD and use on 2 devices at the same time.
first off unlike SKY GO which you have to add 2 devices and register them for use.... Netflix allows you to install it on as many devices as you want, it just means only 2 can watch at the same time.
Thats usually enough for most people although you can pay a little more for more connections.
Personally Netflix edges Amazon Prime simply because nothing on it costs you more, its ALL part of the monthly fee. Also there is slightly more content
Just like Prime, Netflix has its own dedicated content thats only available on here.

Once leaving SKY you need to get your fix quickly with something else... or you will end up taking the offer of 6 months cheap sky that will get posted soon lol
Then your back to square one ;)

If you started a box-set on a service like the ones above, you will end up watching 2-3 episodes a night and soon forget about sky... im sure people on here can recommend something addictive haha

Then of course there is the extra channels we get through our motorised dishes for the films and sport ;)
And there is lots of illegal stuff i could mention if we was in the pub.... but on a public forum i will just say dont be naughty :p

I've taken the leap of faith this morning.Sky's gone replaced with Linux boxes (all legal viewing cards in there) and nowtv. We're just under 100 a month better off but more important i feel liberated.
