Thanks, I think I'll join you as dazed and confused.
I am not clear how a Freesat channel is designated amoung the many transmitted from the satellites. On most days we can receive the 7 day EPG (on the box that I have not fiddled with) so if the tuning data comes from Eurobird we should be able to rescan.

Also we have recovered the BBC channels that we lost the other day, must have been a weather problem as they are still on the same frequency.

We have not been able to receive BBC1, 2 or Channel 5 (London) for nearly a week, is this likely to be due to weather conditions in UK or Cyprus? The only BBC channels getting through are BBC1,2 (Scotland) No probs with ITV channels.

Also I have been trying to record the Ashes highlights on ITV 4+1 (do not receive ITV4) but it always fails. Is this channel encrypted in some way to prevent recording?

Its nothing to do with the weather - a new low band transponder has fired up on Badr 5 at 26E on almost the same frequency as the desired channels and its destroying your reception due to interference. Theres nothing you can do about it apart from find different frequencies to watch. Its going to get worse over the next few months as more Badr 5 frequencies are bought into use.

No ITV4 +1 is not encrypted in any way - theres something wrong with the epg info being transmitted - various folks here in the UK have mentioned this problem over on the DS forum

Stuck to the LNB cap, it works!

Easiest if you only want one polarity. Leaving a large slit in the middle for the polarized signal to pass through is the easiest way to do it.

Aluminum sticky tape is perhaps better.

Believe me it works. I did one today on a 2.7m prime focus dish. Lady had no BBC London for a week and today I cut a square sheet and moved it along the dish while reading my Horizon and when I saw the slightest rise in signal she called out that it was working. I was only experimenting and in a rush but will try on other dishes next week.
A mate of mine did the same on a 3.7m and got good results and even CH4 which the customer has not had for ages.

Hows this work then? both 10773H (28E) & 10770H (26E) are the same polarity :confused

I know, if i went too far towards the centre of the dish BBC disappeared completely (obviously) but also too far left or up. Its a fine adjustment to deflect only the frequency from Arabsat. I was doing it the old fashioned way, with the customer calling out "breaking up a bit, a lot, nothing at all, working now".

Its essentially the same principle as the microwave slot antenna invented by Andrew Alford, except the dipole is hidden inside the feed horn. As a screen for rejecting or attenuating unwanted signals, it has a technical name I have long forgotten, along with various boring theories in some dusty books.

Of course, it would be possible to optimize mathematically the dimensions for particular wavelengths. But why bother when fiddling is easier, given the variation in dishes and feed horns?

Or ,to try and explain it simply ,You have two people across a room ten feet apart ,each shining a torch into your eyes. You hold a card up in front of you and block one of the shining lights and all you can see is the other light.
Simples.

Alford would be turning in his grave because the explanation doesn't have a tonne of mathematical formulae.

Exactly. And the equivalent of that is sending a missile out to the Arab-sat :)

How much would an old, but usable, missile cost?

It is only a matter of clubbing together to buy one.

You would all do that for me ? I am flattered. :)
Here's an idea. You know you can get internet by satellite and you can have a receive/transmit dish ? Well ,can that dish be pointed to Arabsat and set the transmit frequency for 10.770H and jam their signal ?

Can I ask. The people who have lost BBC, have you lost Channel 4 as well and are these channels off all day or only part of the day? Here in Gran Canaria I have been losing CH4 in the evening (11:30 onwards) for a while, then about a week ago started getting break up on BBC1 London as well. Wondered if it was connected. Also this LNB cover to shield the LNB from BADR signals can you detail approx size and shape. Thanks

There is a link. Our BBC is affected by 10.773H from 26e,but there is a stronger frequency which I have picked up on my spectrum analyser. 10.730 is on Vertical AND Horizontal .One has many fta arabic channels and the other is a HD channel. That is close to CH4s 10.714H.
Also,we have had problems with CH4 for a long time with dishes situated near mobile/telephone transmitters. I have a customer whose apartment block is next to a telephone substation with a big tower full of antennae and dishes. She has never seen CH4 on 10.714 and I think ITV on 10.832. Luckily we have 12.402V and 12.480V which work on smaller dishes.
