This thread has gone way off topic.
Perhaps we should wait until John gets his satellite equipment before posting any more comments.

Inevitably.

Using marked scales is relatively crude and should be treated as a starting point only.

The precision required for alignment can best be achieved by real-time small adjustments whilst monitoring with a meter or the receiver itself.

Yes, to get the strongest signal, on 0.8W, then to get it to track the satellite arc correctly.
Once you have the strongest signal quality, on 0.8W, you send it East, then West, to check the signal quality, at the ends of your arc, e.g. 42E to 30W.
You then send it back to 0.8W, for fine tuning, by adjusting the motor bracket, and then the dish angle, to once again get the strongest signal quality, on 0.8W, and send it East/West to check their signal quality readings, to see if you've improved it, or made it worse.
You then send it back to 0.8W, and keep adjusting, until you're satisfied.
A little tedious but the only way to ensure that your dish is tracking the satellite arc.

@John Pykett

es correto.

If you've got the pole truly plumb and the dish squarely located on the motor stub, you should find that the need to carry out several iterations of arc-checking is negated.

Indeed, with a carefully installed mount, you don't even really need the south Satellite if employing USALS, as the "Quick Method" that the Motor Instruction Leaflet will describe means you can use any Satellite to fix the arc. This is especially useful for those with obstructions to the South.

But most of us still recommend using the South Satellite wherever possible. "Zero" has a nice feel to it!

I've never found it necessary - best await advice from someone who has.

its not going to be easy aiming for true south without compass, so would i aim the dish approximately true south?

Whatever you do, compass or otherwise, your initial try will only be approximate anyway: Even half a degree error will miss the Satellite.

That is precisely why you need to complete the alignment by moving the motor around the pole and by adjusting the dish elevation.

so i just aim my dish approximately true south then send the dish to thor 1w then fine tune right?

Yes ........

It can't be restated often enough, but the key to getting the installation right is to check, check and check again that the mount is plumb.

I shall leave you in the capable hands of others for the rest of the evening as I'm occupied elsewhere from now on.

If the sun is out at 1.00pm that will give you South. Not 12 Noon as we are in BST.

You don't need to aim the dish anywhere, as your receiver does it for you.
1. Set everything up, ensuring the pole is sturdy and absolutely plumb.
2. Attach the dish to the motor and to the pole, the motor should be at 0.
3. Set the approximate angles, on your motor.
4. Attach the LNB, also set to 0, and your cable.
5. Run the cable to your receiver, enter you Latitude, and Longitude, into your receiver, negative Longitude readings = West.
6. Use your receiver to send the motor, and dish, to 0.8W.
7. Attach the satellite meter , to the LNB, and connected to your receiver.
8. Loosen the clamps, holding your motor to the pole, just sufficient so that you can swing it round.
9. Find 0.8W, once you have 0, on your motor, will be pointing at your True South.

To aid finding 0.8W, go to dishpointer.com.
Enter your Postcode, and press Go.
Select Thor 0.8W, from the drop down satellite box.
Slowly zoom in, on the map, moving the green icon, to your house, then to where you plan to have the dish sited.
Follow the Green line and point your dish in that direction.
The satellite meter should help you find a satellite, which you can then scan in, on your receiver, and the channels should help you identify which satellite you are on.
If on 0.8W, then fine, if you're on a satellite further East swing your dish West, to the right, if standing behind the dish, if on a satellite further West, swing the dish left, again if standing behind the dish.

It really is a lot simpler than you think.
Just wait until you get your equipment and give yourself plenty of time. Take breaks in between, as it is time consuming, and does test your patience.
