....but don't hold it close to the dish/motor as the mass of the assembly will deflect your readings..
how far does the compass need to be from the dish

You are aiming the dish at a satellite the size of a small caravan approximately 22,236 miles/35,786 km away 2 to 3 mm out with your adjustments will = no signals so you will need to double check all your setting as you go.

A small caravan?

That looks to be about a twentieth of the size of Wales.

Being serious for a minute:

you wont find much of interest past 30W and if you can get to the gaggle of satellites slotted around 52/53E you are doing well.

You also need to read up on coverage beams, sooner or later you are going to spend hours looking for a particular channel and not find it. So for instance at 26E you should get a few of the stronger frequencies from Badr 4 but forget Badr's 5 & 6 - they will be out of range for you on an 80cm dish.

And for 5E you will get the European beam stuff easily but the Nordic beams will be out of reach unless you are exceptionally lucky.

Oh there is loads out there to watch. Not a huge amount in English apart from maybe some news channels and regular bulletins on a a few channels. You could spend hours just working your way through 13E & 19E :D

This thread has gone way off topic.
Perhaps we should wait until John gets his satellite equipment before posting any more comments.
