How far back do you want to go mate ..
Welcome btw ..
-----a potted history----
All the way back to the first dedicated TV service in the UK ..
Back when Sky was BSB ...and broadcast in circular polarisation from MarcoPolo ..
Back then it was of course Analogue ..
Other services were available of course but these were not UK specific ...and required large dishes and motorisation as a minimum ..
Back then it could easily cost you a couple of grand for the gear ..
Only when BSB started up and fixed dishes pointing at Astra 19.2 around 90cm did it become of economic and practical interest to the masses.
Really sat as we know it today ..re digital went through a few manifestations such as Dmac ...until a standard was accepted ...
In the UK this was Videocrypt ..
All change after that ...That phase of satellite distibution had more in common with Analogue ..
I suppose you could call it encrypted Analogue ..
True digital is what we have today our arc slot being 28.2 E (Encyption format NDS/Videoguard)..though Dmac and D2MAC not used by the UK _were_ digital formats in their own right..
The rest as they say ..IS history ..

I don't know if the analog reception was better then now. What was important in the analog period was that you saw the image even if the signal was weak. Then you shouldn't have locked this signal. It is true that with many "fleas".While now,in the digital era,you can't lock than the useful signal.

also i wonder why some channels on freesat have weaker quality than others is it because of spotbeam?
Based in the U.K. with your beams I would not have thought so....here different matter eg:- 12129 V 27500 2/3 on Astra 2E U.K. spot beam....not so easy!

80cm Motorised.
Several small Dishes.
Much else.

There is indeed variation, even with three fairly new birds in place. But not enough to trouble anyone in the UK, in practical terms.

Precise location and attitude of each craft, HD or SD, FEC, Polarisation etc all seem to have some minor effect.

Was a lot worse with the ailing birds a few years ago!

And then there is the question of LNB performance across the band .... definitely not flat ..... and also compatibility between LNBs and Receivers. Hard to quantify, though but.

Good morning, hope all is good with you.

Yes, seems not so long ago Astra 2D was seen as a swear word by many here!...............more than ever, skew is vital for optimum reception now.

Be safe. respect-048.gif

why does those things you said effect signal quality such as fec and polarisation?
