Yes, guess I could have written
Si le bouchon s'adapte, le porter
But neither is totally correct, or even used on the street.

I don't think the French use a phrase like 'if the cap fits...' Some years ago I read a post on an Anglo French forum from someone who was selling at a 'vide grenier' (roadside sale or literally 'empty attic') and wanted to know what was the French for 'you're having a laugh'....it's not something the French say....and I have yet to see a hovercraft, let alone full of eels...

Perhaps the Chinese don't know a 'bouchon' is a cork...hence 'tire bouchon' or cork screw/bottle opener. It can also be a traffic jam or 'bottle neck'. I think it's peculiar to Normandy but here a flat cap is a casque....

When one small and inexpensive job leads to another, and MUCH bigger and more expensive one!

Yesterday I went to fit spikey "anti-climb" strips to the top of the garden fence, and I was then going to add them to the top front edge of the adjacent garage.

Fitting those to the fence took about 30 mins, but when I climbed up the ladder to start doing the top edge of the garage I found that almost all of the flashing along that, and along the adjacent side wall, had deteriorated to the point of being almost non-existent!

Today I stripped all the remains of the flashing along the top front edge, only to discover that the horizontal wooden board under it was almost completely rotted away - and the vertical fascia board in front of it did not look too good either, probably because the sealant/filler between them had almost broken down. When I took the facia board down - and it was badly rotted and warped -, I discovered that the horizontal wooden support bar under the horizontal board had lots of wet and dry rot in several places!.

So I'm now in the process of replacing all the horizontal and vertical woodwork, but I can only do that after I have dug out all the rotten stuff from the wooden bar, stabilised it with "wood hardener" (did that late this afternoon for it to dry overnight) and then filled the big holes in it, fitting nearly 4m each of horizontal and vertical boards (going to use impregnated decking boards as I got those quickly today) and sealing between them - THEN I can fit all-new flashing over the woodwork, and FINALLY fit those damned spikey anti-climb strips!
Cost so far:
- Anticlimb strips - £13.58

- Repairs to the garage:
- New flashing and adhesive £45 ish
- Replacement boards £28
- Wood hardener - £9
- Filler - TBD - but around £15-20
- Sealant - £10-15 depending on how much I need.
- Disposable Protective clothing to stop me and my own stuff getting covered in hardener, filler and adhesive & sealant - £10
- Nails, screws and the like - probably another £20

AND, that's probably not the end of it as I still have to do the same thing to the top side edge of the garage (but I don't think, or at least I hope, that the damage is as bad) :(

Ah, I see! You mean just blow the garage up completely and get someone to come and build another one - with a warranty! Good idea - "hand in pocket" please, and from where do I get the explosives :)

Man, you need to think opportunities instead of problems...
An all-rooten garage front is almost as good, if not better than a solid structure with anti-climb strips!
The suckers woudl have climbed up, and fallen through the front and down into the garage and hurt themselves and whatever you have in the garage, meaning double value for money as you can claim insurance on both the stuff AND the garage!
:)

Good point - EXCEPT that, even if all the top front edge of the garage was totally rotten, anyone trying to climb over it and something then it gave way then the bugger would either manage to crawl over on the roof itself (which would probably support him) and probably be OK, or fall back to the ground outside, but not actually into it. Thus very little actual damage to property or contents that is actually attributable to the "miscreant" and so not worth claiming for on the insurance (NCB and so on).

Yup - the "optimist" in me sees that fixing this all now whilst I am able will cost far less than "getting a bloke into fix it" later at a much inflated cost when I am not :)

OTOH, it also says that there has not been any (known!) attempted break-in from that direction in the last 20yrs and so why would it happen now - but, then, the "pessimist" says "sh1t happens"!
