Need to be careful if you do that if the nails are anything like cast-iron or cheap steel, i.e. they can rust.Drill the heads off, hammer the remaining nail flush, apply some polyfilla (or similar), sorted...
Many years ago, when I dry-lined most of the house with 8' x4' sheets of polystyrene-backed plasterboard, I secured the sheets to the walls with a combination of ceiling-tile cement and screws into wall-plugs in the bricks. Over time, due to small amounts of moisture in the bricks, some of the screws rusted and I got brown stains on the inner surfaces of the walls! Next time I decorated, I had to remove the wall paper and extract those rusty screws before refinishing and repapering!
