Well, this usually marks the end of Summer here....they harvested the maize around my place today......beginning at 7am.....hence the first dark, wobbly shot..

..And out comes the string vest and flannels again..
Gone about 7 degrees colder today...and about to get colder at my gaff ..as the replacement double glazed unit I ordered just arrived.
Another job for this evening I think.
This is the 3rd one I've replaced since I had the upvc frames fitted..
The seals go ..and they blow and mist up internally..but only the ones one the South facing side of the house.
I've yet to replace one on the North side..
Got to be Heat/Sun related..

Ours are in Hardwood Frames and last August we retained the frames and had all new Glazing Units fitted as we couldn't see clearly at all, especially in Summer.

Three grand for the whole house, plus a few hours effort on my part to fettle, stain and protect the existing frames and any new beading.

Looks great.

How old were the previous glazing units?

Couldn't afford all hardwood for the French windows so had to settle for hardwood sill and softwood for everything else. The DG units are much thinner than normal as thicker ones couldn't be fitted in to the rebates using the six-pane window pattern that we wanted. These have been in place for getting on for fifteen years now without a single blown unit.

We had UPVC DG put in to the UK res about ten years ago. Again no blown units there either. But we did pay a substantial amount for them so maybe it's the old adage of you gets what you pays for?

My brother has had loads of units blow in his conservatory. Some are three times blown in less than ten years. But he and my mum did get them done "at a good price".

About thirty years, I believe!

Even where they seemed to have deteriorated, closer inspection revealed it was superficial and not incipient.

My glaziers even got some bespoke beading made by their Joiner buddy.

Oddly, DG units in Hardwood frames were reputed to have a shorter life than uPVC installations as Hardwood is somewhat inflexible yet in practice the latter seem to be cr*p - if, as you imply, they aren't done to a decent standard in the first place.

Anyway, I'm off to the Toothwright in a few mins. to get an Extraction done (Tooth and Wallet)

Broke it in a Deck Hockey game thirty years ago: Subsequently had a post and crown, but that finally came loose and then broke, so I've had a gap for about a year - but now the root and the tooth remains are prone to infection, so it's going.

But I've got used to the gap (as has SWMBO), so I shall resist getting a Bridge or other prosthetic. No vanity here!

Yep!

All done. No pain.

It was in two pieces and somewhat infected, so well worth getting done.

The wind has gone round to the north and the temperature has dropped markedly. A stiff breeze blowing down the valley - there will be lots of leaves coming off the trees which is a shame as they are just starting to go nicely coloured.

I've been lucky to find a loft conversion nearby (that appears to be most of the bungalow roof structure, and it's huge) that has liberated a load of 1960's timber. The builders have been good enough to cut it into 15-18 inch sections before putting it near the front gate, so the only work required is to transport it home.

Currently I have enough for about two months of constant burning, and I might go get another lorry load tomorrow before it disappears..

It's been a windy old day here today, just before midday I had a thought about mowing the grass, then the local clouds popped in to say hello and peed all over the grass instead in a fury of heavy rain and wind causing some interesting 45 degree (angle, not temperature!!) rain, so I gave up on that idea...

CH, is this for a log burning stove? When our wood barn blew down here I cut up the (oak) beams and joists for our log burner but thought they burnt more quickly than split logs.

Got to be careful when burning bits of house, mostly cos you never know what the wood has been treated with (I.E. chemicals that are illegal today and can break down into some toxic fumes that fire out your chimney and contaminate the local area) in the past, even moreso if it's covered in paint cos that'll just soot up your flue nicely...

I'm just bloody cold and point blank refuse to turn the CH on until November..
Yes ..I know it's cutting my nose off to spite my face ..but I hate that the fat catz energy companies just get fatter at my expense.
Sadly burning peasants is frowned upon these days ..even when they ARE revolting...which many often are.
I guess I'll just have to wear 2 pairs of socks ...and fingerless gloves if it gets any colder..
..anyone know a good method of triggering spontaneous human combustion ?
Had a couple of 'church of mormon recruiters' at my door this morning..
If I could just get 'em to ignite..
I get a 2 for 1 ...

The mytherin' goes away ..AND I get to warm my hands..
