I'm just bloody cold and point blank refuse to turn the CH on until November..

Had a couple of 'church of mormon recruiters' at my door this morning..
If I could just get 'em to ignite..
I get a 2 for 1 ...

The mytherin' goes away ..AND I get to warm my hands..

Should have invited them in! The hot air spouted may have been worth a degree or two.

The logs have been delivered....I suspect the calories expended in carrying and stacking may be more than those the logs give off...

Hmmm...impressive Rima.....my logs are a mixture, elm, beech, ash, oak, hornbeam and maple. I could go to a farmer and ask only for oak logs but it's very sought after and therefore expensive. If this burns as well as last year, I'll be really pleased...

This year half of my logs ash and rest is alder, birch, little bit of spruce, bird-cherry, osier. I go 100km to my father-in-law forest and prepare logs myself, so it is true about burning calories.

I don't have permission to remove it ..but if someone with a chainsaw was to steal it in the night ...I wouldn't complain...

At my place towards west I also got some nasty trees, they preventing me to go close to horizon, for example 45*W. Maybe you come to cut my trees and I take care of yours?

I'm seriously impressed by Rima's wood store. Guess it must be quite a large (or draughty!) house.

Skomedal - does that amount of wood last all winter? I would have thought you'd need more.

You guys are sooo lucky living 'off grid' with regards to heating..
Years ago ..the discovery of North sea gas and restrictions on pollution (smokless zones) ..mean't most town dwellers like myself had their chimneys disabled or blocked off ..
Grates removed ..and used for nothing other than 'features' ..as it is described in the various house renovation programmes.
CH and radiators fitted ..thus making us dependant on a gas supply..
Then privatised energy firms were created ..and the lusts of fat catz ..and shareholders began holding us to ever increasing ransom..
Sod all we can do about it...but to my mind it is nothing short of criminal.
Its like getting you hooked on a drug ..then your dealer hiking the price for every fix..

Sadly the drug is needed to keep us warm ..and in many cases ..alive ..
the old the sick etc ..
So let's call 'em what they are ..
Energy pimps ...or Energy Barons..
Certainly NOT service providers.
cest la vie

Our house in the UK is a 1930s suburban type with a fireplace in four rooms and none are blocked off. Before I fitted the CH in the late 80s we ahd a couople of winters where we relied on being able to light a fire in all of them.

Nowadays we normally choose to not put the CH on, except in the mornings, and, as it's just the two of us in the house now, light a fire in the evenings. Last night was the first time this autumn that I lit one in fact. We burn wood which we get as off-cuts from a wood yard and we are always on the lookout for house renovations so we can blag the old joists etc. Our storage facilities are much more limited than in France so we can't store a huge amount but even so we feel that it makes a significant impact on reducing the gas bill.

Besides, an open fire is soooo much more interesting to look at.

We have an open fire, but stopped using it four years ago as it is easier and cheaper to use a Portable Gas Heater standing in the fireplace for secondary heating.

But we've also used the Oil Central Heating far less as a result and now have a second LPG Heater at the rear of the house which should cut costs even further this Winter.

They take minutes to heat an occupied room, whereas the CH takes ages to get up to speed. Can be turned on and off like a light switch so are nowhere near as wasteful as CH.
