Hi,

I am a newbie to all this and largely naive...

I need some advice on how to receive UK channels in Malta. I see things about satellite size and things like this, but what exactly do you need to get the signal? Do you just stick a satellite on the wall and plug it into the telly!? Do you need a telly service as well like Mellita, or is this totally separate? As you can see, no idea!

Help, and quick, is needed, and so I look forward to your replies... No jargon please, just plain and simple and if you can explain the jargon then that would be great too so I learn something from this.

Most of the information you require is already here in this Thread.

Suffice it to say that what you can get is very limited indeed and even then you need a large dish (Not a Satellite - the latter are the devices in space that relay the signals your dish receives) and a Digital Satellite Receiver.

Once you've read this Thread in detail and perhaps browsed some of the other valuable info around the Forum, then please come back to us with a more specific question or questions.

We're a hobby Forum and self-help based, so expect people to read up first so we aren't always re-inventing the wheel.

As for "quick" responses, most members visit infrequently and we suggest two weeks as being a reasonable time to wait before bumping a topic.

OK thank you. I did try to read the thread but there was so much jargon I couldn't get into it. I will try again.

Have a read and make notes of the "jargon" you dont understand and when you come back you can tell us what you understand from this thread and ask about specific "jargon"

Best thing to do is read this thread a few times, making notes and also have a search of the forum too

It`s best you try and get your head round most of it before coming back with questions though

hello jack,
you need to find out what you want to receive.
if you want sky uk that you will need a dish set up about 1.30 meter of bigger. you will need it aligned to sky uk and you will need a sky uk box and subscription.
and the card has to be mated up to the box
there will be no bbc 1 or bbc 2 ever .
malta is not that far from naples italy.

As suggested by other members the Best is to have a good look around this thread plus a any other material in this Forum which you can lay your hands on.

Now as a quickie you need a Decoder (Satellite Receiver) in between the Satellite Dish and your Telly and No you don't need Melita once you have your own System running. Melita is a Cable system company.

Hi Jack :)

The quickest way is to contact one of the satellite installation places listed on the Internet. They will do the whole thing for you, but be ready to spend a good few Euros.

if you have a sky box from the UK then all you need is your dish, if not then you can go for a dreambox and if you search dreambox malta then you will find a whole lot of people listed, but be careful. I've learned a few very expensive lessons.

Where are you in Malta?

I cannot comment on the local reception conditions in Malta but I can offer some advice on getting a Sky card. Never use an expensive third party to get a card - always go directly to Sky. You need a UK postal address for this....

1/ Go to _https://mysky.sky.com/replacecard/get-a-card and click on "Don't have a viewing card?"
2/ Fill out the details to order the card - UK ADDRESS.
3/ Buy a Sky box from eBay (Amstrad DRX890 is a good buy). It can often be delivered direct to you.
4/ Get you antenna installed -`for future proofing best to get a quad LNB installed.
5/ When card and receiver arrive in Malta get it all set up and phone Sky WITHHOLDING YOUR NUMBER to activate it. The box should not be connected to your phone line.
6/ You're up and running with freesatfromsky (notwithstanding any reception issues).
7/ If you decide you want to subscribe to Sky simply phone them up and tell them. They will take bank/card (I think it is best to use a UK card if paying by that method) details for the monthly subs. You should also be able to swing a 6 month discount as you have supplied the equipment. They will activate the sub and Sky+. Make sure the receiver is on and tuned to a receivable channel (e.g. Sky News).
8/ You're up and running with Sky.

VERY IMPORTANT: It will not be possible to do the conversion to a full Sky sub if the address you are using already has a Sky sub (it does not matter as long as it is just freesatfromsky). There are ways round this but I would be reluctant to post them on the public forum.

_http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20111002/local/Police-probe-Dreambox-use-in-Malta.387247 Police probe Dreambox use in Malta - timesofmalta.com

"Police are investigating the use of the popular satellite-based TV system Dreambox following complaints filed by foreign networks.
We take the issue of piracy extremely seriously
- Discovery Europe

Although the police would not officially comment on the ongoing investigation, sources confirmed they are probing the service providers rather than those who have purchased the console."

Most folk find a dish sufficient!

I think its now time for me to replace the old DB500....I am now losing channels left right and centre - can anyone advise what i need in order to receive the uk terestrial channel ITV1 (just lost it this week and assume that it has been moved along with others to a new unreachable satellite on a 1m dish) we are in Mellieha Malta and would like to get itv1 and the UK sky channels. I realise bbc and ch4 are virtually impossible to get here.

I currently have a 1m dish in a motor..and am keen to improve by installing a larger dish if needs be - 1.50m maybe 1.8m - so could anyone advise where to get a sky HD box and subs form plus a reliable and reasonable installer...much appreciated.

NB will increasing the dish size make it possible to get itv1 back again or not.

currently using a db500s, 1m dish, and a quad LNB 0.1db.

thanks in advance

hello.
itv 1 is still on 12.402v and has been there for over 3 years.you must have a active card it is not free.
ch 4 and ch 5 has now moved to astra 1n and we are getting it here in naples with a 1 meter dish on a good day and no wind.
ch4 and ch 4 are now free and you will not need a card. a friend has just mounted a 1.25 dish and is picking up ch 4 hd and its comming in strong here in naples as well.
malta and naples are more or less same area.

You just need to add new frequencies to your Dreambox _http://www.lyngsat.com/astra1n.html , whether you'll see them with your current dish is another thing altogether.

Really Ralph - you know as well as anyone that for fringe reception the signal strength can vary over a few miles, let alone a few hundred miles! :)

The reports coming in so far suggest the south east axis of the uk beam is better than the south west & north east axis on the beam.

FreesatfromSky cards - 25 quid from Sky delivered to UK addresses only.

No point for you anyway as the widebeam ITV frequency will be discontinued in a few weeks and moved to the 1N uk beam.
