@digi24 - Most essential BBC services are on 2D - so to assume the test HD transmissions will come from there too is probably a good assumption, me thinks? Assume the worst.

However, you are right - the BBC have been moving stuff around (BBC Parliament back on wide-beam:eek: ) - so your HD luck might be in if you are otherwise outside the reach of 2D (like me). Guess we should keep an eye on Lyngsat or member tps news.

@ STICK - Not a chance :-rofl2

I feel a line from the Matrix coming on ..... "its, like a virus ....."

My interest waned a little when this topic started producing chav-babies across the board. I am still as confused as I was yesterday.

Regarding the original question: I know what set-top box I would recommend though, hehe.

Mark.

I agree with U BarMoo, however I wouldn't be surprised at all seeing the world cup transmitted in HD from 2A !!!

Don't forget that BBC is using the 12441V (Astra 2:cool: for its interactive services from where England's football games have been transmitted in the past !

I really don't know what is really going on with the 11954H on 2A. I checked yesterday and I saw that they had added 2 additional streams which do not show anything for the time being.

Update: just had a look at the BBC's tps on Lyngsat. Seems like there is space on one of these two contenters for the test HD channel.

2A | TP13 (2xTV, 2xInteractive) &
2D | TP50 (2xTV)

So I guess that's sorted, hehe.:-rofl2

Makes sense. There are less services on that 2D transponder (sic).

Although its beyond me what right's issues would necessitate the use of 2D. No doubt there will be a BBC logo on there somewhere. Ah, hold on a minute, maybe its because they are starting transmissions in DVB-S1:-rofl2 :-rofl2 :-rofl2

Fart! Let them get on with it. For the sake of one channel they should throw on a wide-beam, encrypted it and let SKY look after it till they get their act together. IMHO the Beeb are probably more interested in the DVB-T HD trials I am sure.

Rant, Rant ...........:D

Whats so funny about using DVB-S if they dont have the ablility to use DVB-S2 and have the transponder space to use DVB-S let them do it.

Im sure the only reason DVB-S2 is going to be used in Europe is because broadcasters/satellite operators cant afford to launch satellites specailly designed for HD like what the Yanks are doing.

Should they go on and use 2D this will mean very bad news for all of us who live well outside the 2D footprint. I hope this is not the case, although I am sure that What Satellite should know something when naming the frequency to be used.

This thread is like a long piece of spaghetti that just won't go down, LOL:-rofl2 However, I will perceiver!

It was a rhetorical joke - calm down. :-doh2 Of course they will have the 'ability' to use S2 - for the time being, I don't know, maybe they borrowed some kit from GMTV. ({})

Let's face it - you are probably pissed that your PC kit won't be ready for the footie: I feel for you; but its pointless going on about it [will this thread ever end? ] [was remlap one of those that got it working? ]

Whatever, the satellites we crusty-'ol europeans have at hand are quite capable of doing both HD in MPEG2 and MPEG4 and all for the same transponder price: there is no yanky super-sizing happening AFAIK.

I've got an idea. If I were you I'd swipe a SKY HD demo box from Comet and buy a half decent flat panel from Ebay China - then you won't miss a thing:D

Sorry the last part comes across a bit patronising, but, fart, its only telly;)

Have Fun.

I honestly really dont care if the BBC uses DVB-S or S2 because I wont see the difference on my monitor anyway!

It seems to me your more jealous that the average joe will a decent CPU and DVB-S satellite pci card will possibly be able to see the HD tests.

I am interested on a technical level but not a practical one: for this reason only.

I have a dish that is 40m above me with an LNB that has one output. I use my standard SKY box everyday for the mundane stuff in life.

So I would have to buy a dual LNB, introduce another 40m run of high-spec cable, buy a dreambox (or PCI card?), install software, etc, etc,. In fact, the only thing that is good to go is the PC.

You could replace the Dreambox/PCI card with a SKYHD box - but, I would still have the basics to deal with and, frankly, I don't have the spare dosh flying around to pleasure myself like that - as much as I do get into tournaments like the World Cup. ;)

Something different: my problem is not the footy - its the Eurovision Song Contest from Athens - in May - in English - in SD (and probably 4:3).

Any help appreciated.:D I'll be starting a thread soon.

Have Fun.

Trust you to be the first to comment, LOL. I think I have had that avatar for the best part of a year now. Well before the mighty woes of these darn threads, hehe.;)

You can pleasure yourself on my Samsung HR720 DVD-HDD Recorder if you like, hehe:D Some of the best pleasuring is in German - just like the link:eek: Directly under the product photo there is a box called 'produktfotos' - click this and you'll probably orgasm after the second pic (and only €220.00).

I know, its OT, but what the hell.

Have Fun.

Hi remlap

First of all, tanks for all your support and information.

I was not aware (I'm only a newbie) of the problems that I may have in catching Astra2D here in Portugal if I don't choose the right combination of LNB and dish size !!!

I think I'm going to wait until BBC tests begin, in order to be sure of the satellite and transpoder where the HDTV test will take place.

With that information, I'll try to choose the best combination dish/LNB for this purpose.

But there is one thing that I didn't understand in this last message of you.

When you wrote "And it begins", are you refering to problems that have begun with your configuration, or to the HDTV tests itself ? Have they just begun ?

Thanks

Ervil

And it begins literally meant it began last night!

High def in the true sence no, they are upscalling BBC1 and at times News 24 from listening to audio.

Its using a weird form of encoding, certain codecs will decode it, this doesnt seem likely they will use this its not a standard other broadcasters have decided to use for MPEG4 on DVB-S.

I cant help about Astra2D reception in Portugal sorry

What V-PID/A-PID did you use?

I'm scanning the following on 10847 V:

Code:
BBC 1 East (W):10847:v:0:22000:2305:2306:6903
BBC 1 CI:10847:v:0:22000:2315:2316:6904
6940:10847:v:0:22000:0:2320:6940
T4 DEV-0:10847:v:0:22000:0:0:6990
T4 DEV-1:10847:v:0:22000:0:0:6991
T4 DEV-2:10847:v:0:22000:0:0:6992
T4 DEV-3:10847:v:0:22000:0:0:6993
T4 DEV-4:10847:v:0:22000:0:0:6994

Only the first two have V-PIDs and carry just SD signals. Thanks.

I wouldn't if I were you Ervil. Here's why.

If you have the hardware and have followed the hap-hazard software posts on this board: you will have already tested your kit (Decoder/PCI Card) with the wide-beam FTA transmissions from 19.2°E. Have you done that?

Then there is the obvious. You live in Portugal and don't even/haven't tried to get a standard BBC signal from Astra 2D. I live in Berlin and I would need a minimum of €400.00 just for the dish (then there is the stand, etc, etc.)

If you have loads of Lotto dosh lying around - fine there is still time. Else, give this one a miss or nip down to the local bar where, hopefully, all the patrons have arm-bent the landord into buying an HD setup for the football.

@ remlap. I really hope you get your stuff to function as a live_TV thing. Of all the posts that I have read - you stand out as being determined and persistant.;) I can see you sorting everything out just as the opening ceremony starts, hehe :D

Have Fun.
