Broadly speaking It would be possible - yes. I use a 1.2 Gibertini and 95% of the time that's sufficient. The fly in the ointment is the Ka Band A lnb.
Pucka commercial ones are expensive to very expensive. An ex satellite broadband Hughes 18GHz can be had, usually from the States, from around £30 -50, add onto that customs charges and postage but are as rare as hens teeth at the moment.

Oh yes the cheapo ones are out of band I see. Ok I'll look out for a Hughes one, Newsnet making it as hard as possible for the sat feed hunter then :(. I didn't realise just how many feeds there are up there now on 18 ghz

On 18GHz vertical pol signals it's usually ITN regional OB short feeds from up and down the country. Horizontal polarity at the moment usually has a couple of horse racing broadcast channels to watch if your into that sort of thing - check out the Lyngsat / Flysat sites etc for more info.
There are very occasionally full programming of various content shown on vertical pol, and when there is a major disaster or elections going on the band can be full of feeds.

Yes well exactly what I use to get on 24.5 west, news at ten before they went live etc. Shame these cheapo Ka's don't cover 18 ghz

Add a nought to that figure and a bit more and you would be in the ball park of a multi band SMW Ka lnb :D

:oops::eek:

I went to a talk on the 10GHz band the other week (ham radio :unsure ) one of the subjects at that talk was around LNB's, some of them have bought SMW LNBs that were in their £1000's!!! But thankfully they suggested Octagon do a PLL LNB and buy that instead. I was gobsmacked at the price of some that SMW equipment. The SMW stuff looked nice though :)

Does the PLL enable it to do both Ku-Band and Ka-band? I wouldn't touch the SMW LNB's unless I won the lottery, hopefully one day :)

Can be done cheaper, sometimes it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Trawl fleabay on a regular basis for Ka lnb's and one day you could get lucky. The little white coloured Band A-18GHz 'Hughes@ DRO lnb's don't need any mods but you do need the correct WR42 scalar feed to suit which type of dish you will be using it on ie: PF or Offset.
For an alternative to the now unobtainable Inverto Ka/Ku lnbf (Band D on Ka) Iv'e followed s-band's, Grahams lead on modding ex-satellite broadband Gilat ODU's by removing the Rx board, grafting on a suitable WR42 feed, re-house & waterproof it and away you go. The one that i have modded for use on 16/7/4.9° East satellites actually performs better than my Inverto Ka/Ku but are Ka only and one polarity only - which ain't to much of a problem at the moment as all the broadcast Tv action is on Hor polarity. Again, these can be picked up off the bay from anywhere between £20 to £50 - depends how lucky you get .

It was looking on google for a Hughes (18ghz) when I found that “other” ka lnb.
